Sail On - Where does the reference come from?

Hi Phriends, I have a question: when someones passes away, Parrot Heads use the term Sail On. Do you know where that originated? Is it in a lyric? Any history would help.

This is just for my own curiosity.

I think it just means heading on to wherever/whatever is out there beyond this life.

It means what it literally means: "keep going" or "sail to your destination", in nautical speak it is sometimes used with "fair winds and following seas, sail on" - good luck to you on your final journey.

A poem by Joaquin Miller about Columbus repeats the line as the last line of each paragraph. This is the best place I could find it for you.

Thank you both, I understand what it means but I was just wondering if there was a specific Buffett reference in any of his songs (Sail on Sailor doesn't seem to be it) when it comes to dying but it sounds like it is used because it is a nautical reference and it just caught on in the Parrot Head World.
