As some may have guessed Mrs Rabz and I have spent a bit of time hopping around small Pacific Island nations.

From that you may well also surmise that small traditional village type places appeal to us.

We are looking for suggestions for out of the way places in Hawaii.

I have no useful information. (surprising, I know)
We visited Kauai several years ago. A beautiful island, probably much less developed than Oahu or Maui.
Can't speak to the "traditional village" thing. Not to say that it might not exist, we just weren't seeking it.
We stayed on the north side of the island in Princeville which is mostly condos. A few miles up the road was Hanalei, a very small town with a beautiful beach (Hanalei Bay) and a few shops and eating establishments. We had lunch with Julia Roberts there one day. And by "had lunch with", I mean we happened to be in the same deli at the same time, seated 15 feet from one aother and she was completely oblivious to our existence.

Hi 'Bits,

Thanks for the info - it is a starting point.

Hawaii hasn't really been on our radar, as it was an "early adopter" of tourism it has (apparently) morphed into the full on touristy joint. Don't get us wrong, a lot of folk like that kind of place. We're just not number amongst those folk.

We have been lucky enough to spend time in various parts of Polynesia and feel comfortable with the Polynesian culture. (Oh and Melanesian too).

Mrs Rabz has recently become a devotee of playing the Ukulele, so Hawaii has, accordingly, been placed firmly on the agenda.

My next step will be to find a couple of specialist Hawaii travel places and start digging there.

(I guess this means my long wished for Mo'orea trip is back on hold :) Happy Wife = Happy Life)
