UPDATE: 5:15 p.m. EASTERN TIME....

From Linda Soniak - Carolinadreamin:

Hi ya'll. I just left Connie after visiting for a while. She is definitely "feisty" Connie. ❤ I think her pain might be in better control today. I ran out and got her a smoothie as requested. I will visit again tonight and/or tomorrow. If you have tried to call her and she's not answering, it's very difficult for her to talk on the phone because of her oxygen mask.

The latest from Geoff:
Hello folks.
It is my onus to inform all who have been following my updates on Connie that I left Fernandina and am returned to my home in Panama City.

First, I would like everyone to know that Connie has improved since I first saw her early Tuesday (and I was shaken at her state then); her breathing, her speech, her coherence, and her humor. I was there almost the full 48 hours of wait before any decision of entering a Hospice that her doctor asked of her, then the extension of another 24, the end of that, and through her (present) decision to just stay in the hospital and receive care and treatment for her pneumonia.

After her improvement of the past 3 days, current holding stance, and my updates for the Group, I felt as though I've done what I can to improve her situation, within my ability. Nothing more I can do there...but there's things in my own life that I DO need to do here, including return to work (that whole exchanging of services for $, still require food and shelter to survive, durn it.),

Rest assured that Connie is still receiving love, support, and inspiration DAILY from visitors, both locals and travellers to Fernandina. There was a room full of them when I left, and more coming. smile emoticon

As I receive information from Laura (who works at the hospital, and they're allowing her to perform all of her clerical/records duties right IN Connie's room), and others, I will post them here on the Group page, unless I see that others have already shared it.

Thank you all again for your support of Connie, and I will be in touch.

So sorry to hear of this, I haven't talked to Connie in several years but have thought of her often. I remember a conversation we had about the stupidity of smoking.

Connie, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Been following on FB but so glad I checked in here because things like this need to be shared "at home." Continuing to send Michigan hugs and Phin Power to Connie. Keep up that feistiness. Those nurses can get out of hand at times.

My hand is out and reaching for...........

UPDATE: 2:30 P.M. EASTERN TIME

From Popcorn Jack:

"After a flurry of late night phone calls and text messages between myself and Connie, her family and the hospital staff, and with more communication this morning, it seems like a situation is coming to a head and needs to be addressed.

It’s a testimony to the impact Connie has had on so many people that there has been an overwhelmingly steady stream of people visiting her, and I chose the word overwhelming for a reason. Connie’s on a pretty serious cocktail of pain meds right now, and one of the side effects is that they are messing with her reality something serious. What may seem like a warm friendly gathering of people in the room to you or me is going to challenge her ability to stay focused and present, and let’s be honest: that’s what we want.

There is an element of selfishness in each of us making a visit with her as we each in our own ways deal with mortality, both hers and our own. And although it’s easy to hide those fears in a large group of people, ultimately we will feel the regret of not taking the time to connect with her one on one.

To that end, I’ve talked with Laura and put together a sign up list with alternating 15 minute visiting times and resting times for Connie. This way everybody gets the chance to have that time with Connie, and she can focus on just one of two people at a time and not be overwhelmed and distracted. And it may seem tempting after 15 minutes to think “She’s still alert and focused. We can keep visiting” but remember there are other people who want the same opportunity you do. Likewise if you show up for your visit and she’s sleeping, respect that as well.

And before anyone asks, I’m going to be doing the same 15 minute visit. When my time is up, I’ll go to the beach, visit with other people are there, maybe just drive around the island. Because ultimately the visit is not about me. And it’s not about you.

It’s about her."
