Jimmy taking a break from touring

Post by MDShark70 »

According to the story on the front page of this site, Jimmy will be taking some time off after this year from touring. Like he says, he'll be 70 on Christmas so I get it. I'm sure he'll still do some one-offs at little places and probably return to bigger venues in a year or two but it will be strange not planning vacation days around tour dates. You knew the day would come but you kinda hoped it never would. I'm going for 5 shows in 10 days in August so I'm hopeful that will hold me for quite some time.
It was too much tequila . . . . or not quite enough.

Glad we have our tickets for the Vegas show. Our go to hotel in Vegas is getting a remake starting the end of the year, guess that was a sign for me at least that changes were coming.

Hopefully if he does take a break it will be just to skip over Spring dates with a summer tour still in the works for 2017.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

Well that certainly sucks. Glad I'm going to Camden and ac this year

Sad to think that 2014 may have been our last GW show.

Happy we can get to (our only 2016) Pittsburgh this year

Glad to be seeing him, even if it is only once this year. At a new venue, too.

He hasn't been filling the old places for a few years now. He's getting older, we're getting older. Fewer shows at smaller venues makes sense. Just glad he is only slowing down and enjoying life - but not fully retiring.

I may be trying too hard to read into this what I am wanting to read into this. But, am I the only one who thinks that the author of this article from the Houston paper may have taken this quote from JB completely out of context? Read the quote:
I’m not working as much as I used to work. I turn 70 this year, and I’m going to take some time off and enjoy myself.
Folks, the first part of this quote is something we already know. He did 41 shows in 2012, 32 in 2013, 30 in 2014, and 32 in 2015. At the moment, we have what will amount to 28 shows in 2016. So, the first part of the quote is in no way any "breaking news."

In the second part of the quote, he says that he is going to take some time off and enjoy himself. To me, when you combine that with the first part of the quote, it seems that he is saying that the number that has already dropped the last few years will drop a little more.

I may be wishing, but to me, this quote in no way implies that he is not going to tour in 2017. It implies to me that there will gradually be fewer shows as he gets older.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I didn't ready anything about not touring next year. That might be what he meant, but Jimmy usually takes the winter to recharge anyway. But whenever he does take a break, it's going to be hard to get motivated to tour again when you're past 70. He'll find a lot of things to do to fill his time and wonder how he ever did it all before.

He did mention having some other projects in mind, and bringing a camera along, taking the fans places not so easy for them to get to. Not sure what to make of those comments. :o

I don't think there will be a full blown tour , or even a rehearsed tour like in past years. I do expect him to play smaller venues , like The House of Blues. If he was going to retire , i'd think he would do a farewell tour. I'll see him in AC this year.

I'm also of the mindset that this quote is out of context and being blown way out of proportion. I watched the Frisco show on MargTV and he did say "see you next year!" That's good enough for me.

I can't speak for the other places, but the Houston show was packed even with the bad weather. And it is always packed. I also didn't read his quote as meaning that he is not doing shows, but I can see him dropping down to 20 or 25 shows in big venues and a few shows in smaller places, with maybe no formal tour.

Jimmy loves the stage and seems to still really like playing for us.

Yeah, I agree. The more I read the article the less I think it will be an official retire. He will just do less shows and smaller venues.
