Good morning BN. Take a minute to think of the drama of this day, when our forefathers broke free of England with the Declaration being signed. They surely understood that England would retaliate and all of their properties and lives were at stake. Raise your flags high today, pholks!

Good morning. Just got home a few days ago after a week at the beach. Set off some fireworks last night. We're allowed to
own "real fireworks" now in PA, not just the wimpy fizzle and pop kind. Today getting stuff together for the Camden show. :pirate:

G'morning! E and I are going to see "Incredibles 2". A rare movie outing, and even more rare that it's an animated one. But we really liked the first one. :)

Hope you all have an enjoyable day!!!

Good morning. The Pelicans had a nice fireworks display after last night's game but it was a standing room only sell out crowd and it took more than 1/2 hour to get out of the parking lot.

One of the between inning things they've been doing this year is something they call the High/Low Game. They take a fan out on the field and give them prices of 3 grocery items and the fan has to guess if the real price is higher or lower. If you get 2 out of 3 right you win a dugout mug, a beer mug made from the barrel of a baseball bat. When I got to the game last night I went to the guest services desk and asked what I had to do to have a chance to win a dugout mug. They said I just had to ask, gave me a release of liability form to fill out (there's always a chance of getting hit by a ball even though it's between innings because the infielders are throwing the ball around to loosen up) and told me to come back at the end of the 7th inning. They took me down to the end of the dugout at the top of the 8th inning and said we'd go on the field after the bottom of the 8th. The on field host said nobody has gotten all 3 prices right so even if I got the first 2 they would still ask the 3rd one to see if I could get it. I got the first 2 and the 3rd item was a 12 pack of Bud Light for $8.99. I said "they should give that stuff away for free but I think the real price is higher." It was $9.99 so I went 3 for 3 and won a dugout mug.

Interesting tidbits about the Fourth of July...

Congress actually voted to declare independence two days earlier, on July 2.

The legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain in 1776 actually occurred on July 2, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June.

After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence.

Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it two days later on July 4.

On July 3rd John Adams wrote to his wife “The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed.

Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, James Monroe, another Founding Father who was elected as President, also died on July 4, 1831. He was the third President who died on the anniversary of independence Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872; so far he is the only U.S. President to have been born on Independence Day.

Anyway, Happy Independence Day, be it July 2, July 4, August 2, or whenever!

Afternoon BNers
No need for sunglasses today, we are flooding.
Not here, but Houston is a mess. Firework show will go on, but all other activities have been canceled. And no one can go to park with fireworks, so stay home and watch it on tv.
I usually watch the Macys firework show.

Very intresting, S.P.H.- thanks for that. I think I'd heard earlier that the Declaration was written on July 2, but was unaware of the significance of August 2nd.
Another bit of July 4th trivia, if anyone recalls the name- Stephen Collins Foster- who has as solid of a place in American folklore music as anybody- (everybody knows who he is, they just think they don't)- was actually born on July 4th, 1826. On the 50th anniversary of the nation's independence, and on the exact same day, as you mentioned, that Presidents Jefferson and Adams died.
School's out- happy Independence Day to all.
