That still doesn't distinguish a song from being a cover and one written specifically for the artist that has never been recorded before by anyone (including the composer).

Nah, I'd say it's more a matter of the responsible parties not doing their homework beforehand.

That scene is overrated. Kids see worse sh*t than that on their video games.

Seems like a very legitmate line of discussion to me or perhaps you're just unhappy that it's not turning out in your favor.

By the way, who's the old hag in the picture?

Why does it need a label? It's a song, that's good enough for me. Because there needs to be a way to distinguish between an original composition and a song written by someone else for a particular artist. I see fans and reviewers alike crediting songs to Buffett that he never even had a hand in. So...

It's one THEY wrote....they - thems did it. I agree, even if the artist has never cut it. Going back to an earlier example, Willie Nelson wrote Crazy for Patsy Cline. Therefore that song is a cover of a Willie Nelson song even though it was written specifically for her. This would remain true even ...

If people can't tell the difference between Rupert Holmes and Jimmy Buffett than I'd say their fandom of Buffett is severely in question.

"Song" or "new song" covers a lot of territory and doesn't seem to imply the definition we've discussed. I'd say "cover" (even though the song in question may have never been recorded by the writer) comes a lot closer to describing it.

...but if it's not a "cover", than what is it? 1) the song was either written for the performer (e.g. Bama Breeze) or written and pitched to the performer (e.g. *many* of George Strait's recordings). While the performer does not get writing credit, he/she is the first performer to record ...

I strongly disagree with this: If the artist performing the song had no part in writing it, it is a cover song. I understand where someone may write a song tailor made for a certain artist but if that artists' name does not appear in the songwriting credits I don't consider it an original song by t...

Rod Stewart's massacre of the classics doesn't really make him relevant. Artists like Bob Dylan and Tom Waits still writing and recording original material at this stage of their careers is . Then again, Rod's creative well has been dried up for quite some time, at least as far back in the 70s when...

It's worth the donation just to get Austin City Limits, Soundstage and the American Masters series which last year featured the Martin Scorcese directed Bob Dylan bio No Direction Home.

The reason the programming was off is because of pledge drive itself, there's nothing they can do about that. Personally I wholeheartedly support the arts, including PBS and NPR. They offer programming you simply can't get anywhere else.

Except for on the live album that preceded that called You Had To Be There that just so happens to include several of the same songs that made the cut for Feeding Frenzy.

Look out for the hippies!

As for as live music venues I've heard nothing but good things about the Grey Eagle and the Orange Peel. If you make it to the Westville Pub be sure to look for the plaque dedicated to the late, great Mr. Gerry Livers, a huge live music supporter if ever there was one.
