Margaritaville coming to Boston

Post by lime rickie »

The restaurant/bar, not the play. No location announced and no specific date yet. Perhaps around the GW show?

I stopped going to the one at Mohegan Sun when they closed the gift shop (which is the only reason I personally ever went there), so hoping they will be selling a fair amount of Buffett related merchandise at the Boston location and not just doing the restaurant/drinks.

The Mohegan one didn't get enough business in its later years mainly because it was not centrally located within the casino, and you really had to know it was there in order to look for it/find it. But I think one in Boston would do quite well.

Think it's pretty clear at this point that the Boston Mville location will very likely not be opening this year, or if it does it would be much later than August. Of course now we know officially that the GW show will not take place then. Some states are easing restrictions, yes but now is still clearly not the time you would want to be opening a new business especially in a crowded downtown area.

Very interested to find out where the specific location in the city will eventually be.

If I had to guess, it will be in the Seaport area. I'm not sure if anything went into Jerry Remy's place or Whiskey and the Priest. Water views.

Anyone have any updated guesses for when the Boston Mville location might actually open for business? Maybe August or September of 2021 when the distribution of the vaccine is more widespread? Even if people still couldn't dine in safely, you would think that just doing takeout and selling all the merchandise should be enough to keep them in business.

That would definitely make sense but then again, they emphasized water views when choosing their location within Mohegan Sun and that didn't work out so well in the end. It was overlooking the Thames River which was nice....it was also in an area of the casino which was hard to find. It got plenty of business back when he played at Mohegan regularly, but after that it struggled.

Heard another rumor last summer that this new location might not end up being in downtown Boston at all, but instead in Foxboro.

At Patriot Place. I could see that. The only problem with that is, it's not a destination place like Boston. I think there was a fallout between Buffett and Mohegan Sun. His wife was on the board of directors, and I think something happened there. The place was always busy. Especially when there were concerts going on at the arena.

Couldn't agree more. I'm a huge fan of Boston sports in general (Red Sox, Bruins, BU) but never really liked the Patriots as much as the other Boston teams. It would make sense to put it there just because it's close to Great Woods, but it wouldn't have quite the same appeal.

The now-defunct Boston Breakers NWSL soccer franchise used to play right in downtown Boston/Cambridge (they also played in Somerville for two seasons) and I drove up to attend their games all the time. Most Breakers fans were also fans of the New England Revolution MLS team, but I never supported the Revolution since they played at a stadium designed for football in Foxboro instead. It just wasn't the same.

That night in 2012 when the Breakers won on the same day as the Lounging at the Lagoon show at Great Woods was a night to remember for sure!

Another neat idea (which would probably never happen) would be to have a Mville location on the South Shore near Nantasket Beach. That way it would still be close enough to downtown Boston, but also right on the water.

Hi heard yesterday that it's going to be in Faneuil Hall. My brother bid on the project, I guess they want to draw people back to that area. The Seaport area has taken some crowds away from there.

Faneuil lost a few restaurants due to COVID (and probably other factors, too). But that is where the tourists go so [smilie=noeyedear-shrugging.gif]

Seaport is crazy booming with new build and business.

I know, and taking some of that Faneuil Hall business. They need an attraction to get some of it back.

Mystery solved! Do you happen to know when construction is set to begin, or when the target date is for when it might open? Later in 2021 or not until 2022?

A friend who works for the Boston city government and deals with permits and a Parrothead told me a few moths ago this info. Margaritaville-Boston was supposed to go in the spot where Dick's Last Resort was in Quincy Market (Faneuil Hall) (blue circle). With the COVID shutdown they never started the renovation of the Dick's Last Resort so the project stalled all last year. Since then a few more places in a more desirable spot for foot traffic that fit the size they need shut down in Quincy Market including Cheers (blue/red circle) so both theses spots are being looked at as potential locations for Margaritaville-Boston. Durgin-Park Restaurant also shutdown in that area and was thought to be a potential landing spot but the lack of outdoor seating was a deterrent and I think that location has become a new restaurant. And for what it is worth, that Cheers location has been a revolving door of restaurants, since the 1990's, I can count at least 8 restaurants who have come and gone from that spot. But of the two spots this would be the better spot. It has for more visibility.

Durgin-Park closed? Wow. I spent a lot of time in Lexington/Boston back in the 80's and that was a favorite place to go. It was more than 100 years old back then.

I was surprised when i heard they were closing a few years ago. I used to love the raw bar downstairs.

Another thing, the property managers of the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Ashkenazy Acquisition are under a lot of scrutiny with how they have dealt with the pandemic and the merchants. It has been a complete mess, they fought earlier last summer with the city over its unwillingness to provide relief to merchants who fell behind on rent amid the pandemic all the while while Ashkenazy themselves were $2.1 million in behind in city tax payments are were facing their own eviction. Boston owns Faneuil Hall Marketplace, but Ashkenazy serves as the landlord to the marketplace. Many merchants closed due to issues with Ashkenazy.

Durgin Park closed in January 2019 so it was unrelated to the pandemic.
