This may sound like a VERY dumb question but here goes...
If the Reefers perform apart from Jimmy, why do they go by the name Club Trini? I was at the CT website and looked under the tour dates. Surprise! They're the same dates as Jimmy's tour. Am I missing something here? If I wanted to here CT perform, sans Jimmy, where do I go (besides buying the CD's)???
Not exactly sure what sort of info you are wanting, but Club Trini started around 1996 with Michael Utley, Robert Greenidge, Ralph MacDonald, Roger Guth, Peter Mayer, Jim Mayer, Nadirah Shakoor and Tina Gullikson performing in the parking lot and venues before the BIG show.
I guess Johnny Lovell also played with them at times. The dancers also performed. I remember seeing Julie and Heather in some places.
Their first CD was released in 1996 -
Club Trini. Nadirah's song Love Is Made of This was on that first CD.
They also released a CD in 2000. Club Trini - Back in Town.
I know they had a CD release show (or two) in May of 2000 at Margaritaville.
Just as they seem to just appear in the parking lots and venues before the shows, they disappeared. People asked why, but I don't remember hearing why they stopped playing.
I don't think I ever saw them as a group except at the concerts, but they have played together in other combinations at Meeting of the Minds.
I'm sure this is all at their web site and I guess you can probably hear them at Meeting of the Minds in some combination.
The name "Coral Reefers" belongs to Jimmy and not the band. There have been times that the Reefers have been made up of just Jimmy while other times it includes the full group of musicians and entertainers. The tour date listing on Club Trini's site (I'm guessing) indicates that they will be performing in the p'lot before the show.

Unless something has changed, Club Trini hasn't been performing in parking lots before the shows for a while now.
They played the Street Fest at MOTM last year, and sounded great!
The last time I remember seeing Club Trini play before a Buffett show was Feb., 2002 in Ft. Lauderdale. It's also the only time I remember seeing them play before a show at an indoor venue. I lost my spot right up front when Heather came out in the crowd to start a conga line. Let's see - stay up front and watch Club Trini vs. first on the conga line with Heather. Easy choice.
I guess it just seems a little strange that when Jimmy walks off stage, the band "magically" becomes Club Trini. Since it's all the same members, y'know?
Let me put it another way. I guess, to me, it seems that since Jimmy has toured, he's always played with the Coral Reefer band, (even though some of the members have changed over the years). So naturally, over the years, I have come to associate one with the other. And to see one perform without the other, with a name change, just seems wierd.
So I wonder, would Jimmy change his name to Marvin if he were to step in on one of CT's numbers?

It grew to include some of the other Coral Reefers but Club Trini and The Coral Reefer Band were never the same band. I don't think Amy Lee or T.C. Mitchell ever performed with Club Trini. I think Ralph MacDonald played with them when they played the side stage before the outdoor shows but I'm pretty sure he wasn't a part of the band at Club Trini shows when they played during the Buffett tour's down time. I don't think Mac McAnally was part of Club Trini either. Better musicologists might have different information, but that's how I remember it.

We saw Club Trini a few years ago in Easton, Pennsylvania at a Jazz Festival...also some of the Coral Reefers doing single shows (Peter Mayer and others.) The last time we saw Club Trini in the PG Pavilion parking lot was back a few years...

Club Trini is/was a totally different sound and concept.
As much as I have listend to their music, I'm not sure I could recognize the names of their songs, but really enjoy the instrumentals.
Wouldn't it be nice to have them play outside the venue before the big show again, but they didn't in Dallas, so I guess they just want their show dates on their web site. Sure makes sense to me.
I know guys who play in different groups and call themself something different when in a different configuration, such as Jimmy when he's with the Beach Band. That's usually Jimmy, Robert, Ralph and Mac. Right.

I'll third the motion. I have a poster at home of Greenidge and Utley (two really nice guys btw) doing a record sale and autograph session before one of the Raleigh concerts. They were promoting the CD, which has their photo on the CD cover. This would be circa 1996 or so.

How come on my sirius radio, when listening to JB cover Bob Marley's No Woman No Cry, the teletype says, "No Woman No Cry - Club Trini (Live)", when JB is clearly the front man?

So when Jimmy joins them, they're Club Trini. When they join Jimmy, they're the Coral Reefers. That does seem kinda wierd.

I'm not absolutely positive but I'm pretty sure this is the first album I heard by Utley and Greenidge outside of the Reefers. I haven't been able to nail down an exact date of release but I remember it from at least the late 80s.
