Joe Merchant Movie?

Post by nvparrothead »

I just finished reading Where Is Joe Merchant for the third time. I've
enjoyed it every time and think that it's a great story. It's definatly one
that you can read over and over. I've heard that Jimmy has looked into
making the book into a movie for a number of years, but never got it off
the ground. Does anyone know if he is still pursuing this? I think it would
make a great film and we should encourage him to do it. Just my
thoughts.

Who would play Frank Bama?

I nominate Nicholas Cage.

Who would you cast?

I agree!!!

Frank Bama..... hmmm...... Nicholas Cage doesn't fit for me..... too serious.... Fifteen years ago I'd have said Tom Selleck!

That's what I thought the entire time I read the book. Reminds me a little of his character in "The Rainmaker" that he played so well.

I really think Frank Bama and Joe Merchant don't really have to have a huge star to be done well. That being said, I'd still like to see SOME stars in the movie. But there are a few stars that I think would be good casts for Frank Bama: Mickey Rourke (if he's still sober enough), Bruce Willis, or Dennis Quaid. For Joe Merchant, I think Jeff Bridges (somewhere along the lines of a more "with-it" version of Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski from The Big Lebowski).

Blanton I think could be a Kevin Costner, Kevin Pollack (plays a sidekick well), or maybe a bolder move with a Geoffrey Rush. It would, after all, be appropriate to have at least one "pirate" in a Jimmy Buffett movie. :pirate:

Trevor Kane is the most challenging placement for me. I think Uma Thurman, Rene Russo, or even Jennifer Aniston could pull that off; however, I think Trevor Kane would be a good role to cast with an unknown or a low-key actress.

Billy Cruiser could be done well by Nick Nolte. I can't really think of anyone else that fits the bill off the top of my head, so a kudos to the last post that suggested Nolte. It's a good fit for sure.

Root-Boy: I'm thinking Doug E. Doug (of "Cool Runnings" and the second version of the Cosby show fame) could be good, but for that role it would be best to have a true islander with a solid grasp on acting. It should be authentic.

And for Colonel Cairo: as jeff e said, Louis Gossett, Jr. would be a good pick. I think that perhaps Don Cheadle could do the role, or maybe if Samuel L. Jackson could overcome his accent and mannerisms he could pull it off. However, a "Pulp Fiction" or "Shaft" verion of Cairo would be bad for the movie.

You know what's wrong with us casting this movie over and over every few years?
These actors keep getting older... the characters never do. If they don't hurry
up and make the darn thing, we'll have to cast people who haven't even been born yet!

It will never be made into a movie. Look how long it takes for some of these live albums to come out. Enjoy the book becasue that's all there will ever be and remember, Frank Bama did not say the best navigators are not always sure of where they are as Jimmy excalims in Don't Chu'Know on Barometer Soup. It was Billy Cruiser who said it.

First of all never say never unless you like to eat your words. It's an

awesome story, and could be made into a film in the near future or even

down the road by one of Jimmy's children. Someone with big bucks may

also come along and decide to buy the movie rights and use Jimmy as a

consultant. Endless possibilities. Hey Desdamona... Before you even

posted a reply I meant to say that Desdamona should play Desdamona.

You'd be perfect, IMO. Oh and there really is a Cosmic Muffin so you've

got your rocket ship. See http://www.planeboats.com/

Never! I said it! I said it again!

Oh come on, it will not ever (or never) be made into a movie. There needs to be some, a little, reality in Margaritavilleland and Joe Merchant never being made into a movie is part of it.

Hey, I would love to be wrong, believe me. I hope I am wrong someday. Just as long as it's in the next 20 years or so, before Jimmy gets to the point of needing an IV of Green Label.

I've read it twice and don't remember that. Silly me. I'll have to read it again

btw I think that Val Kilmer would be a good Charlie Fabian/Joe Merchant.

I did lighten up. I said I hope I am wrong. Wasn't it obvious?

I'd like to see the movie done so there's an actual flying boat on the movie screen and in the movie poster in the Twentyhundreds. It might be the first movie to feature a flying boat in it for the first time in the Twentyhundreds.

Although I haven't seen - are there any seaplanes/flying boats in Hoot? Or any other movies released in the last five years?

Cool seaplane site Sam thanks! Sonofabeach you've got the right idea.

It's just fun to wish, dream, hope etc. Uh, Ducky you kind of stalled out

the thread(negativity half empty glass?). Maybe you have some good

ideas for the movie. It sounds like you also liked the story. You are right

it would be sweet to see some flying boats on the big screen. There is still

a lot of casting to be done. We still need a dolphin, Monty Potter, Val

Vicentes(spl), Rudy's two girls who else? Locations?

I'm not sure what led me to imagine Cairo's character that way, I just pictured a Louis Gossett type bad guy (like his character in "The Deep") from the first time I read the book. Guess it's time for me to find it and read again.....and I also would like to see Rene Russo (or Diane Lane) as Trevor.....

I remember Colonol Cairo operating out of Africa for part of the story, but also don't recall him being black. I know that he did have a facination with the great black king of Haiti, Henri ChristopheI. So maybe? Guess it's already time to read it again. Like I said it's a re-read :)
