Today is National Hot Air Balloon Ascension Day:

National Balloon Ascension Day on January 9th commemorates the first balloon flight in the United States in 1793.
The French aeronaut, Jean Pierre Blanchard, took flight over the Walnut Street Prison in Philadelphia above a large crowd. He ascended in a hydrogen gas balloon, a popular balloon at the time. George Washington witnessed the launch of the balloon, too. That day he lit the fires of fascination with ballooning in Americans.

Same here. I’ve been severely afraid of heights since an episode going up the Ponce de Leon lighthouse in Florida while 5 months pregnant with daughter Bridget who is now 30

Good morning Moog and Linda. For a number of years, I made hot air balloons with sixth graders at my country school using tissue paper and thin wire. The wire made a ring opening and added enough weight to keep the balloon from rolling over on ascent. I had a 4 foot pipe open at the base where paper was burnt for a heat source I held the 2x3 foot balloon over the pipe till I felt it lift and I'd release. On a perfect, warm day, I had up to six balloons floating over a hundred feet up. Sometimes wind would blow them away. On occasion, a spark would get in the bag as I released, catching it on fire as it rose. That created issues!

Lifting off a hot air balloon in Philly in early January?? Currently 29 degrees heading towards 41...on the ground! Can't image air temp up in the sky. How about a warm June or July day for heaven sakes??

I've been in a hot air balloon 4 times in my life. It's peaceful and beautiful. I've crewed on the ground and that's SO MUCH fun!!!!

Slept in till 8:30, which was great. Going slow this morning. A little snow falling. Right now just a dusting, a little more later. Stop at our storage unit to get Christmas boxes to put everything away. Pick up a few groceries later.

I'm 55, quickie for me is 5 hours.
