Re: What are YOU reading?
This is a terrific history of Key West with all the Buffett characters present. I just started it and can't put it down. And the author lives two towns over. I'd love to get the book autographed. Got it on Amazon.

Re: What are YOU reading?
I just finished reading Mile Marker Zero by William McKeen (who also wrote a bio of Hunter S. Thompson called Outlaw Journalist. Mile Marker is about Key West in the 70's. There is a lot about Hunter, Tennessee Williams, Tom Corcoran, Tom McGuane and Earnest Hemmingway among others. And, oh yes, there are some stories about Jimmy Buffett. And then there is Phiil Clark and Jerry Jeff and Captain Tony and many, many more.
It's a fascinating well written book that reads more like a novel than a non-fiction book. But I must admit that there is more information in it than I really wanted to know. As a baby boomer, raised in the rather sheltered environment of central Illinois, I just don't know how to relate to some of the stories. I don't think I am shocked, but I just can't imagine...
But I highly recommend the book (with the caveat that it gets pretty raunchy in some places) to those of you who love Key West and want more inside stories about the "early" days.

Re: What are YOU reading?
I read "Wicked" a while back and didn't realize there are 2 other books between that one and this one but so far it's a fun read. Especially since I've always been a Wizard of Oz freak.

Re: What are YOU reading?
I just read this also and thought it was great. I'm kinda sad I finished it already. Thought it was kinda interesting how he made Tom Corcoran the central character. Lots of great stories in it,especially Hunters I thought. I've read alot of Hunters books and books about him, but never really read anything about his Key West days.

Re: What are YOU reading?
I just finished a book I stumbled upon by accident and its about 10 years old; RIPTIDE by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child.
Its a piratical treasure hunt/thriller/suspense. Starts out 200 years ago in the prologue, but is set in present day. Mixed in is a little history, and I thought the visual imagery was well done.
For the nautical lovers out there I think you'll enjoy. Its not at all comedic like Hiaasen or Dorsey, but definitely a good read. Sorry, I cant get the book cover jpeg to copy here for some reason, but you can find it on amazon or anyplace else for that matter.

Re: What are YOU reading?
Read the new Michael Connelly. It's a Harry Bosch book and it's really good.
Am re-reading THE SEA and have ordered THE SENSE OF AN ENDING ... it won the Man Booker Award this year (England's equivalent of a Pulitzer).
We also have a copy of the new George Kennan biography. Am ready to tuck into it tonight.

Wow. My wife, who is distantly related to Mark Twain,
for Christmas, wanted the 100 year anniversary of his death
release of his autobiography.
This is just Volume 1 ... 700+ pages and the print is THIS TINY.

Stephen King's 11/22/63. Haven't been able to get into his stuff for years, and don't like time travel stuff, but I really am loving this book!

I think the ties to reality and history probably decrease the creepiness in it, and certainly keep my interest up. Halfway through and really enjoying it! Curious what you will think when you read it.East Texas Parrothead wrote:I've heard the same thing, ejr ... am thinking about asking for it.ejr wrote:Stephen King's 11/22/63.
