Sail on, Sherriff!
Black and white memories for me, too.
I always imagined the rest of the USA being like Mayberry, although the only parts I had ever visited were Detroit and Buffalo.

Yes, another piece of my childhood is gone.......

While going to school on the bus, we had a radio and the local station used to play

at least once a week.
ohhhh, the memories.....
My mother, who (God willing) will turn 86 herself in just over a week, has an old 78-rpm record of this along with several other recordings of Andy singing and doing his spoken-word routines.  We can also expect AMC to do an Andy Griffith-themed movie marathon in the near future (not that there's anything wrong with that); I certainly hope they manage to find and run a copy of "Onionhead".

Sail on, Andy.

this news saddens me. My boys, who are 12, 6 and 4 years old, will sit and watch the Andy Griffith show with me. They like for me to whistle the tune.

Nice how Jimmy has been paying tributing to Andy and the gang at quite a few of the shows this tour.

Here's the introduction of the characters in Atlanta:

We have no less than a dozen news stations that have descended on the town today. My mom's employees have been interviewed three times. I expect more tomorrow - playing off of 4th of July and small towns.

Jimmy has actually refrenced the show for a few years now- that's how Janice and I came up with the idea of being the wild women from mount pilot. But he has done more with it this year during the acoustic part. I'm sure he will reference Andy 's passing at some point

I'd like to see Jimmy do the theme song as a tribute to Andy.

With or without the lyrics?
I vote for without.

That would be perfect.

Earlier this year I saw the Gourds pay tribute to George Lindsay, Adam Yauch and Levon Helm during the middle of "Gin n' Juice". The tunes were "You Get A Line, I'll Get A Pole", "Fight for Your Right (To Party)" and "Up On Cripple Creek". I really can't think of another band that could have pulled that off, at least not in that unique way that makes them the Gourds.

I, too, grew up watching "The Andy Griffith" show with Sheriff Taylor, Deputy Fife, Opie, Aunt Bee, Otis (the town drunk), Floyd (the barber), Ernest T. Bass (local hillbilly), and the rest.......too bad the world has changed so much......

Even though I also loved it, I never took The Andy Griffith Show to be an accurate representation of what the world was really like, especially during the time period in which it aired. There was much strife in the world in those days but you never saw anything about racial issues or the Vietnam war on The Andy Griffith Show. There's still wars and inequality in the present but if anything, we've come a long way since the very turbulent times of the 1960's and 70's. The Andy Griffith Show represented a nearly utopian small town, one we could all take solace in and will always be able to thanks to reruns.

Very sad at his passing. I lived a kid's life not too different from Mayberry, but I still wanted to go live with Andy, Opie, Aunt Bee and the crew. As an adult circumstances have drawn me to NC and I have dear friends there now. In some odd way, I have Andy to thank.

Sail on, Andy. Mayberry will never be the same. I hope Aunt Bee greeted you with a homemade pie and I'm sure Barney was waiting with a big ole grin. Rest high up on that mountain; we'll miss you.

Griffith’s wife Cindi released a statement Tuesday, saying: ““Andy was a person of incredibly strong Christian faith and was prepared for the day he would be called Home to his Lord. He is the love of my life, my constant companion, my partner, and my best friend. I cannot imagine life without Andy, but I take comfort and strength in God’s Grace and in the knowledge that Andy is at peace and with God.”

“Mr. Griffith has been laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island. His favorite causes were Outer Banks Conservationists and the Griffith Scholarship Fund at UNC-Chapel Hill," his family said in a statement.
