Key West question

Post by CUparrot »

Hubby and I have free airline tickets (comp from getting bumped from a flight earlier this year) and we are thinking about using them to go to Key West for our anniversary in July. Problem is.....the tix are with United and United apparently doesn't fly to Key West (at least no flights that we can find). So what would be our best option? Fly to Miami and rent a car and drive the rest of the way? I don't even know how long a drive that is. Or get a different flight from Miami to Key West? And how much do those flights usually run?

Just looking for suggestions, if anyone has any to offer.

from MIA to MM0, about 185 miles, the best of it being after you leave FL City heading south. :)

Dr. Corona is 100% right. The wife and I did this, the drive is fantastic, you get to see all the keys on the way down, the long bridges, it is awesome. And definately sunblock, that was the day I discovered my hair wasnt as thick as it used to be

If you can stop at a place or two along the way, lots of great places on way to key west.

Last month... we hit Homestead (just south of MIA) about 5pm on the way down to MOTM. Put the top down and headed all the way to KW... it took 3 hrs.... It was an awesome drive...even in the dark! 8)

Drive it abosolutely!! and take your time.. It's long and can get tedious yes, IF you didn't stop it would take 4 hours but stop on the way... there's tons of great stuff, parks (Bahia Honda) dolphin places etc.

I used to make the trip about every full moon or so back in my college daze,, pre-Buffett.. we'd camp on the far side of the seven mile bridge at a place we named Acid Key.. [smilie=graytard.gif] Things have changed a tad since then.

Check this web site out,, like I said,, take your time,, maybe even spend one night in the upper keys! http://www.fla-keys.com/
And I can play this here guitar,,
Gonna thank my lucky stars.

Thank you stars!!

Like everyone else says:

Fly in to Miami, rent a car and head South on US-1 for about 3 hours.

Put Jimmy in the CD player and enjoy the ride!

Drive!

And try making a compilation CD of all of the Songs Jimmy has wrote about the Keys (you'll find a lot of them on BBB&B)... It's a cool thing to have when you are sitting in the 10 degree weather thinking about how much you wish you were back in the keys right now :-?

fly to Miami drive to KW the drive is wonderful. Make many stops along the way and be sure to ask the people here what stops to make.
When they run you out of town make it look like you are leading the parade.

Drive, I agree. However, if you can fly into Ft Lauderdale (FLL) instead of Miami, I'd consider it. Unless things have changed recently, there's a lot of construction going on around the airport in Miami. FLL is way easier to get in and out of, and no construction to fight....

Thanks for the advice everyone!! I think we are definitely going to do the drive. Sounds like that's the best way to go. I will post closer to our trip (not until July) to get tips on the places we should check out on the way.

Yup...did that last April. Not all of them were directly about the Keys, but for the most part they captured the feel of it.

I've made the drive a few times. Once from Connecticut, and the other two from Miami and Fort Lauderdale (the other times I took the flight in). It is simply breathtaking. I'll never get over it- the bonus is what's waiting for you once you get into Key West. What a happy place year 'round.

Don't knnow where you are staying, but I recomend the El Patio Motel for great rates, good pool and a little peace and quiet when you stumble back from a good night out.

Bar?- The Green Parrot- best happy hour, period. Capt. Tony's is a close second- had my picture taken with him 2 years ago, God bless him!!
Cheap lunch? El Sebonay.
Rent the bicycles when you get there, spend every day there like it's your last.

Hello everyone!

like so many other folks, I am planning a trip to key west.
I have been looking around the boards gathering info,
and I am waiting for my work to green light my time off...
then I am buying the tickets!!

I wanted to thank everyone who posted suggestions up here,
they have helped a lot.
and if anyone can think of anything that hasnt been mentioned
yet, please let me know :)
also, if anyone is interested in grabbing a drink,
feel free to drop me a line because I am going on this trip solo..
:( but I plan on having a great time anyway!!
