Eddie Van Halen in Rehab
Eddie Van Halen in Rehab
Jean-Michael Salamanca 03/09/2007 2:43 pm
In an open letter to his fans that was apologetic and redemption-seeking in tone, long-time Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen has checked himself into a rehab clinic, following years of alcohol abuse.
“I have always and will always feel a responsibility to give you my best,” Van Halen, 52, expressed to fans in the letter. “At the moment I do not feel that I can give you my best. That’s why I have decided to enter a rehabilitation facility to work on myself, so that in the future I can deliver the 110% that I feel I owe you and want to give you.”
Eddie’s statement follows the announcement of the band’s induction into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame, scheduled for Monday at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
This is not Eddie’s first time entering a rehab clinic. In 1995, he told Rolling Stone magazine that he entered rehab twice, including his drunken driving arrest shortly after leaving an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
Fan reaction to the news on the Internet is mixed, some offering support and hope for the legendary guitarist’s quick recovery, while others express cynicism over the move, questioning Eddie’s sincerity to get better.
The band’s publicist and Eddie’s girlfriend, Janie Liszewski, was not available for comment on whether or not Van Halen will still tour with former frontman David Lee Roth this summer, or if they will be at the induction ceremony in New York City next Monday.

Re: Eddie Van Halen in Rehab
Another press release recently stated Eddie would not be in attendance Monday and that only Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony would be there for the induction. Van Halen also won't be performing, it will be Velvet Revolver.a1aara wrote:The band’s publicist and Eddie’s girlfriend, Janie Liszewski, was not available for comment on whether or not Van Halen will still tour with former frontman David Lee Roth this summer, or if they will be at the induction ceremony in New York City next Monday.

No Van Halen, or Roth, at fest
Los Angeles Times
Published March 9, 2007
Van Halen is set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a New York banquet Monday night, but now it appears that only one original member, bassist Michael Anthony, will even show up.
Eddie Van Halen released a statement Thursday saying he is going into a rehab program. Former frontman David Lee Roth, meanwhile, said Thursday that he will not attend the ceremony because he wouldn't be allowed to perform.
"I don't make speeches for a living; I sing and dance for my dinner," Roth said, adding that the decision to skip the event "rips my heart out."
The Hall of Fame's event organizers plan for Velvet Revolver to perform some Van Halen classics, much as Metallica stood in last year to play Black Sabbath songs while that band's members watched from the audience. The choice of Velvet Revolver was in response to a sticky situation about what Van Halen lineup could take the stage.
Roth, speaking before Eddie Van Halen's statement was released, hinted that his compatriot is hurting. "If Ed ever dries up, this is going to be a stadium act, man."

No, he's 64 I think. Not much older than some guy named Jimmy Buffett.
Both of whom may be on the way to proving that alcohol is, indeed, a pretty good preservative
