Little Feat

Post by parrotheadatl »

I had to laugh when somebody compared Little Feat with the Doobie Brothers. Feat was head and shoulders above the Doobies. I would equate them more with the Dead. They toured several times with the Dead and swapped the coveted closing spot with them. I could be wrong but I think Buffett opened for them a couple of times. They were (and are) a wonderful band with a devoted cult following. They play music with a heavy Southern influence (Oh, Atlanta & Dixie Chicken). Some of their music has a definite country sound. Does that sound vaguely familiar? Sort of like Buffett, huh? Jimmy obviously likes them a lot. The opening song in this tour is one of theirs (Time Loves a Hero). Their keyboard player now tours with Jimmy (Bill Payne). And License to Chill has a Little Feat feel with lots of Payne's piano and Sonny Landreth's slide guitar. Landreth credits Little Feat as an influence. Little Feat founder Lowell George was considered a genius...up there with Garcia and Gram Parsons.
I love it when Jimmy influences his fans to branch out and try something new (or old).

Ok, if Bill Payne's touring with Jimmy, and other people are saying Utley's not having fun during shows--- anyone else see where I think this is going....

I'm in agreement.
I never knew that Jimmy opened for Feat, but during "Jimmy's Jump-Up" tour (1990?), Feat (or some incarnation thereof) opened for Jimmy. I saw them at William&Mary and it was a great show. I believe Little Feat was promoting their Let It Roll album at the time.

wonderful memories and a terrific pairing, IMHO.

Saw Little Feat open for Jimmy in Hilton Head S.C. around 1991, Texas Twister was big and Buffett had a Volcano and a Shark balloon rigged to fly across a high school football field. And Bill Payne was a great surprise in Atlanta last summer. pirate:

By the way, saw Bill Payne with Mac McAnally during Thanksgiving week in Key West. Saw them together walking down Duval the night before Thanksgiving and then again the morning after Thanksgiving at Pepe's eating breakfast and later that day outside Shrimpboat Sound studio. We were told that Mac was producing a Little Feat record there.... 8)

I'd take the Doobies over Little Feat. McDonald was and still is a great vocalist. His Mowtown CD's are great.

I prefer Little Feat over the Doobies (any era) but I think the comparison comes from both bands doing lots of session work in LA back in the 70s. I still like Little Feat but they're just not the same without Lowell nor will they ever be. They broke the mold when they made him.

You shouldn't have to worry about taking flak for expressing your opinions as such.

Side note... Little Feat also opened for Jimmy on 7/4/98 in Raleigh, NC at Carter Finley Stadium.

I take credit for the comparison. I almost used Kansas instead of the Doobie Brothers but I think everybody assumes Kansas was a joke. All those bands sound very similar on classic radio stations. I will definitely give them another listen. I'm a fan of Gram Parsons and can appreciate the Dead.

I'm sure there's people who don't see the artistic difference between Duran Duran and a-Ha. Some artists just don't translate well outside of their primary generation.

I like the Doobies, but "Juanita, My Sweet Chiquita" brings a smile to my face every time I hear it. Brilliant!
