I grew up south of Chicago in Romeoville. Left in 1976. Have visited a few times since. Glad to be gone. ;)

Been in Colorado for nearly 30 years, and STILL love it. :) Yes, there's snow and cold. But NOT 9 months of the year and the Colorado ranks as one of the sunniest states in the US, with over 300 days of sun a year. 8) And the lack of humidity makes the winter AND summers more bearable.

I don't love the snow, but I can tolerate it. :)

Don't ski, tried when I was younger, and never got the hang of it. Mountains are BEAUTIFUL!! :D Great things to do up there all year long.

And for the record? I love the ocean, warmth, and palm trees. ;) And Elrod and I will live there as soon as possible. 8)

But you have to admit that it's fun skiing and sledding in the snow.

I don't mind the snow all that much and I can take the cold as long as it's not windy. But I grew up by the Atlantic and boy did I miss the ocean whenever I was anywhere in the middle of the country. I don't think I could live where the salt water wasn't nearby.

If you read the title of the thread, you'd see it asked if Parrotheads love the beach and snow... I'm not sure why you're posting in it.

 :D

I am kidding, but if you don't realize it, that's what you sound like at times.

I don't often find myself in Jahfin's camp, but this time all he did was point out that he defines himself as a fan, but not a Parrothead. I don't see how that was designed to annoy anyone, really......

You're right...this was just left over sentiment from discussions earlier in the day from a different thread.

Yeah, I kinda figured. But trying to be fair, I felt I had to say something. :)

I'm an avid skier, for a midwesterner, and I was wondering how many of you out there are like me? I love the beach, but if I had to choose between the mountains and the ocean, I would have to take some time to think about it.
I don't think that I'd have a problem choosing. It'd be the ocean for me & the Mrs. However, since that's not happening any time soon, we choose to cope with the snow.

We spend as many weekends as possible skiing/riding at Sunday River, ME. I love the snow when its in the mountains, NOT the driveway.

I grew up in San Diego, going to beach every day in my "carefree" youth.
Now, I live within a few miles of the Pacific, and I love the coast, but I more often find myself heading inland for my relaxation over my adult years.
Country roads, Fall leaves, even some snow, and old western country living is inside 45 minutes when I head east into the mountains.

I don't know too many others like myself, who take their vacation days in the Winter so they go on a skiing safari across the West! 8)

I love the beach, mountains and snow! I now live on the side of the mountain overlooking the beach in Southern California! 8)

I too used to be an avid skier...until I broke my leg (once) and had to cruise on back home. It is a shame too, since there is great skiing at Mammoth, just a few hours north of us...usually into JULY! :o

Mammoth Mountain is one of the best ski resorts in the US......

I live out here on the left coast where I can wake up early drive 2 hours, Ride at a local Mountain and drive home for an evening surf. I LOVE WHERE I LIVE!!!!!

I love going to the beach...and hot summer days...but I wouldn't trade a PA fall or winter for anything...it is so peaceful and magical.

the older I get the more I hate the cold weather. We had about 8 inches of snow overnight and I spent an hour cursing the snow as I shoveled out my driveway. However, I am an avid skier so I do have a bit of a dilema. I just need to find a way to ski in 90 degree weather and I will be all set!!

How about behind a boat near an island?

Easy choice for this desert rat.... I need warmth. Its supposed to be 59 today and that still too cold. I grew up in New Mexico, shoveling snow, and scraping windshields. It was -3 there yesterday. They can keep it.

I like the beach.

It's just a different kind of Christmas. My memories of winter as a kid were delivering the Newark Star Ledger and Asbury Park Press in waist deep snow. Shoveling driveways, bumper riding and ice boating were staples of my youth. I bring up the newspaper routes for one reason. A large portion of my route in those days consisted of a senior citizens building. I listenend to countless stories from those people of their lives, where they were from, and what things were like in their lives when they were my age. When other kids I knew were watching TV or logging time in the arcade, I was listening to what it was like to be a sports writer covering Babe Ruth, or what it was like to be a proud, young 20 something mother of 3 widowed on account of a beach called Omaha (RIP Mr and Mrs Reilly). Many nights I wandered in way past dark, not knowing I had learned more in the last 3 hours that I did all week in school.

What does this have to do with snow and the beach... I have had the opportunity, as an adult, to experience Christmas and "winter" in a whole different way. I traded in a snow shovel for a Cajachina and learned to roast a lechon entero or "whole hog" for Christmas Dinner. Instead of snuggling up to a warm fire on Christmas Eve, I spend it outside every year in a block party with everyone outside with fireworks ringing in Christmas Day at midnight. Never before had I encountered 1 part Christmas to 1 part 4th of July with a cafe cubano in my grasp.

I have seen a few impromptu Carnival celebrations pop up in Antigua and Dominica, complete with pan players and mokojumbo. Not to mention a few Christmas Marlins pulled out of the Gulfstream in Bimini for the Christmas Fish Fry.

I do miss the fall, turning of the leaves, and the rewards of a long awaited springtime. These are memories I am forced to carry with me these days as days gone by.

But who knows where life goes. Could very well be I will look back as an old man at these memories. Seeing how Christmas was spent in the islands, and how deeply devoted my Cuban and other latin friends are to the Christmas season, and how to celebrate it other than emptying the bank account in a wild attempt to impress those close to you with gifts.

Look what I've done....I've rambled.
Merry Christmas, whatever island you're on.
