Pirate looks @ 40 chords
Alrighty,
After looking at the many video's of Jimmy playing Pirate, he has a unique way of playing it that is not on any tab site. He seems to play it pretty low on the fret board, atleast some parts of it.
Does anyone know exactly how he plays it?
And no, the tab is not on CABO, only chords.
Any help, it would be awesome!

Ok, i am no genius and i may be wrong about this but...here goes. Best i can figure the chords on the sites and books( G C Am etc) are correct if you play along with the song. I always wondered what he was doing also and have only come up with an open tuning on the guitar. Only Jimmy knows how he originally played it but maybe over the years he turned to open tuning to make easier cord shapes. Anyway i never tried to figure out which tuning it was but my best guess is open G maybe E.

From an observer's point of view, Pirate is the only song where he uses that one guitar...so he could have it tuned differently.sharp1 wrote:Ok, i am no genius and i may be wrong about this but...here goes. Lee Toten emailed them to me. I know G C A are in there. I can't remember the rest but I can tell you that some of those guitar chord things online are subject to the interpretation of the person posting the chords and some may sound ok but they aren't right.
Also, Jimmy doesn't tune the guitar differently for that song.

According to the Jimmy Buffett Guitar Anthology book, the chords are...
G- C- C/B-Am7-G-Am7-Bm7-Am7-G-C/G- G-Am-Bm7-Am7-G-Am-Bm7-Am7-G-D7-G. In that order. Don't know if it's right or not, but I'm gonna give it a try later on. At least there's no barre chords in it. Damn, I hate those things.
BTW, the anthology book has it tabbed too.

I am not saying that is right or wrong, it's just not how I play it.Reefdiver wrote:According to the Jimmy Buffett Guitar Anthology book, the chords are...

I play it like this:
[G]Mother mother ocean I've heard you call
[C]wanted to sail upon your waters since I was [D]three [Am7]feet [G]tall.
You've seen it [Am]all [D]
[Am7]You've see it [G]all
The "three feet tall" part sound nice as it's played the same way it's sung.

Check out freehandmusic.com, for JB more specifically:

This is a sheet music site and by also downloading Solero, a sheet music viewer, you can buy inexpensively and print out the sheet music with chord/fingering position charts, words, etc. You can view a sample with some of the chords before purchasing and they have Pirate among other individual songs and collections with good chords (Bob Robert's Society Band was fun to learn how to play).

Also I dont know if it's right but in the "Meet Me In Margaritaville" songbook he has it like this:
G, C, G, Am7, Bm7, Am11(on the 3rd fret), G.
It dosen't say anytihg about alt tuning or moving up the fret board. But to me it looks like he is playing the same chords at a different location to add a change or sort of break, since the whole song in the book has no changes to the chords. But I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time that happend.
