2008 Baseball Thread, huh?
Ok . . . Gossage, Rice.
And I will make another prediction:
The Rays starting pitching will have a better ERA than the Yankees starting pitching . . . as their staffs stand right now; I realize that there is a ton of time to change . . .
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

That opens the door for older guys like Rice, Gossage, and Blyleven.
I'm all for voting them ALL in...
I have always thaought that Blyleven should be in the HOF.

Jim Rice: 128 OPS+ in 9063 AB
John Olerud: 128 OPS+ 9058 AB
Bernie Williams: 125 OPS+ 9053 AB
A lot of people think OPS is the most important stat for a hitter....these 3 are amazingly similar! Era makes a difference in perception, doesn't it?
Valid argrument . . .
and Olerud's physical set backs make for a good argument and story.
Post season alone make Bernie a lock . . . but I know it doesn't work like that.

If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

I just looked up his stats. Sure, he had a lot of post-season home runs but only 5 of them were in the World Series and in 6 World Series he hit a Rodriguez-like .208. I don't think he's close to Hall of Fame caliber. I don't see how he ever won 4 Gold Gloves, he was an awful outfielder with no arm.drunkpirate66 wrote:CaptainP wrote:This is why I ask....

Gossage gets in, Rice I think will fall just short, maybe within a few % points.
According to the HOF Monitor, http://www.baseball-reference.com/leade ... itor.shtml which uses a formula that is pretty damn accurate Bernie Williams is right on the line, he has a 133 ranting (130 is considered the HOF line).. Jim Rice is a 146, the highest of any player not in the HOF that is eligible.

What about the Clemens story. Does anyone really think he is telling the truth? I can't wait for next week's hearings, when they ask Andy Pettitte if he was aware that Clemens was doing Steroids/HGH? Andy Pettitte seems like a stand-up guy, I don't think there is any way he will lie for Clemens. The two are best freinds and Clemens wants us to believe that Pettitte never told him he was injected with HGH?

the studpidest thing Clemens said was "if I took steroids why hasn't my tendons turnded to dust . . .?"
Mr. Clemens, your best friend Mr. Pettite admitted to taking steroids and his tendons are just fine . . .

It's because of his 20 years of "giving back to the community" by playing baseball. He gave joy to all of those kids.LIPH wrote:I didn't watch the 60 Minutes interview but from what I read in the paper one of the things Clemens said is he should get the benefit of the doubt. Why? Did Barry Bonds get the benefit of the doubt? Did any other players?

Clemens' lawyer, Rusty Hardin just seems very sketchy? Did you see the press conference yesterday? He passed Clemens a note while he was speaking that said "Lighten Up" then Rusty Hardin giggled and said "I gave him a not that said lighten up".... taped phone calls, passing notes, he said-he said...illegel drugs, sports...it's like High School...
