Tarpon DVD features Buffett music, Capt. Tony and others

Post by livingstonbob »

I just bought this DVD. Lots of 1970s Buffett music. The only song I could recognize was Brahma Fear. It's a great DVD showing Capt. Tony, the Conch Tour train, Tom McGuane (Buffett's brother in law), Jim Harrison and Richard Brautigan. They all hung out together in Key West during the early 70's. I saw a brief glimpse of Buffett. Oh, and good pictures of tarpon fish.

Just Released~TARPON
with authors: Richard Brautigan, Jim Harrison, Thomas McGuane
original music written & performed by Jimmy Buffet
produced by UYA films, inc.

Besides including some of the only footage of Richard Brautigan, the cult 60s poet and novelist, "Tarpon" also features commentary by legendary guides Woody Sexton, Steve Huff, and Gil Drake, as well as Page Brown, an ardent Keys conservationist.

The first of the modern fishing films, Tarpon was shot in the wild panorama of the 1970’s Key West. As they fly fish in the aquatic wilderness of the Florida Keys, anglers and authors capture the essence of the sport in words and dramatic film footage. Colorful scenes of Key West from another era – with treasure hunters, smugglers, hippies and eccentrics – are background to stunning cinematography and tarpon fishing at its finest. Original music by Jimmy Buffet. With appearance by authors Richard Brautigan, Thomas McGuane and Jim Harrison.

You can purchase it at PO Box 1273 Helena, MT 59624-1273 • Fax 406-443-0788
800-874-4171e-mail: orders@thebookmailer.com

The cost is $35 +shipping. I was lucky I live in Helena and just went to the bookmailer and picked it up. (I don't have any ties to the bookmailer), but it's definitely worth the cost to hear Buffett's 70s music and see Key West in the 70s.

Well, after hearing Jimmy speak of doing this soundtrack in books and interviews thru the years, I always wondered if it was still around or whatever became of it, or if it was just another one of those "Semi-True Stories" :pirate: , so when I saw this I had to get it and check it out for myself. Let me tell you, I have now seen it, and it is truly magnificent !!! This is a must have for any true Parrothead, andor fisherman for that matter. The sights, sounds, styles, people and places of 1970's Key West are worth the price of admission alone, it's just too bad they couldn't have stuck a little more of that in there. The fishing is great too. Capt. Tony and his Charter boat is in there, along with many of the great fishermen of the time, expounding on the Keys fishery and the importance of conservation. The music is all early Key West Buffett, and is truly a great backdrop to the footage. Brahma Fear is definitely in there, and I think I picked out part of the riff from "Trying to Reason, With Hurricane Season". Truly a film before its time. Man, that Brautigan cat was deep. [smilie=graytard.gif]

I ordered it on Wednesday, so I wasn't expecting it until sometime this week, but when I returned home today from my own fishing excursion, there it was, sitting on the counter waiting for me. Thank God my wife didn't tell me on the phone last night that I had gotten a package, or I would have had to leave a day early, and some other people would not have been too happy! But boy, will I have a gem to show them next weekend!!!

Running time of the film is about 53 minutes, and the quality is GREAT!!!

It's also fun to see Tom McGuane with very long hair. He has very short gray hair now. It's a great movie. Richard Brautigan was at his best and Jim Harrison looks so young. I think I caught two glimpses of Buffett when they were looking at the treasure from a sunken ship. You can hear the beginnings of Buffett's Key West music. I'm glad you got the video so fast. It's a two gal operation in a little warehouse in the warehouse district of Helena where they send the videos from. Great people.

The movie is about an hour long and even though it was filmed in the 70s, it is very clear, even on a high definition tv.

Thanks so much for letting us all know that this film was available. Three cheers for livingstonbob - SALT! SALT! SALT! :pirate:

I now consider it the crown jewel of my JB collection. I've always been intrigued whenever it was mentioned. I thought I caught a few glimpses of Jimmy in there, but it's hard to tell. I was amazed at the quality of the film, in both it's original production quality, and the conversion to DVD. It was very well done. Being an avid fisherman myself, I watch a lot of fishing shows, and it is amazing how "ahead of its time" this film is. You can tell that these guys were really passionate about their fishing, and wanted to get out an important message about the beauty of the sport, and the need for conservation. I'm going to show this video to a group of guys this weekend, who aren't Parrotheads, but they are fishermen, and I can't wait to see what their reaction to it will be, then I will tell them the back story. :pirate:

I only check this forum once or twice a year. What a great coincidence that I checked it today. I just ordered two copies. One for me and one for my father. This is exciting. I have many passions in life, but two of them are early buffett tunes (marvin gardens era) and stalking tarpon. My father is in Montana now and enjoys my two passions also but is a HUGE Tom McGuaine and Jim Harrison fan. What an incredible combination. I can't wait to receive my copy. The nice lady I ordered the DVD's from said my dad should get his today (he will be very surprised) I will likely get mine by the weekend.
These are some of the best fishermen/writers in the world. I can not wait to see this film...just in time now that tarpon season is finally here!!!
