Where Are The Posthumous Releases?

Post by Gnocco »

So here we are (no pun intended) pushing a year and a half since Jimmy’s passing. Has there been any chatter at all about any music being released? It seems whenever a musician leaves us they are quickly followed by a barrage of (often unneeded) rereleases, previously unreleased material, remastered albums, etc…I figured this would at least be a silver lining to Jimmy’s death. We know there’s a ton of material that has never been commercially available and that there is definitely a market for it. I realize an album of outtakes doesn’t appeal to a huge crowd, but I think there are enough Parrotheads to make it worthwhile. Not really any different than the Buried Treasure album that was put out some years back. I would love a volume 2 (or 3, 4, and 5) but I assume that’s not happening unless Jimmy recorded the narration prior to his passing. If he did, I hope he put a little more effort into it as the stuff he recorded for Vol. 1 sounds like he just didn’t give a s***. I loved the idea of Buried Treasure more than I actually like the album, but I was hoping we would see a few more. Anything would be great. I really thought with all the crap that Margaritaville Inc. likes to sell that they would’ve jumped at this opportunity.

It would be nice to have the “Kick It in Second Wind” album.

I have some really good lossless files of the test pressing. But I often wondered if a commercial version would surface.

All of the lost tapes and music has to do with his camp which is his family. Margaritaville LLC has nothing to do with this stuff. We speak about it at length on The Fool Button Podcast with Travis Turk who found and sold Jimmy the original tapes for Buried Treasure. Jimmy's camp has many lost tapes and the rest of the Buried Treasure project but unsure if they will do anything with it. Hope so cause it is really great stuff. Cheers.

Fantastic with Travis Turk!

So far the only posthumous releases have been seven albums reissued on vinyl and three Margaritavile Records albums getting their vinyl debut via UMe. Which is kind of odd considering there were Buffett master recordings lost in the June 2008 warehouse fire. UMG had the masters to Jimmy's ABC/MCA/Island catalog and some were noted as being lost in the fire but no details have ever been released in regard to which ones or if all were destroyed.

Is as UMe's right since Buffett's estate has no control over those. Think about MEET ME IN MARGARITAVILLE - Fruitcakes, Barefoot Children, Bob Robert's Society Band, Schoolboy Heart and a live version of Holiday from the Margaritaville Records era made it on. Some glaring omissions - where's Another Saturday Night, Barometer Soup, Jamaica Mistaica, I Will Play For Gumbo and Island Fever? All the live tracks and some of the re-recorded and new songs could've been left off (Knees Of My Heart, Sail On, Sailor and In The Shelter) in favor of more studio tracks. Fruitcakes and Creola could've been the single versions which allows more time for more songs.

Will there be another box set or anthology with the rest of the unreleased studio recordings, like what was done for SECOND WIND but removed for HAVANA DAYDREAMIN'? That would be great. Of course, did Jimmy ever want that material released? Apparently not since those weren't included in the box set.

And if those masters were in the 2008 fire then they'll never officially be able to be released so it doesn't matter.

Mailboat Records, on the other hand, could release whatever there is, if not a 'best of the Mailboat years' compilation album. Absolutely pointless with streaming but one never knows. If the edit version of Bama Breeze would be included, plus Southern Cross (the first Mailboat single), well, it would make for an interesting compilation.

If Jimmy said, No more, well, that's probably what will happen.

UM must have “something” because the new vinyl pressings are labeled as remastered. Can’t re master without the master tapes. I have all the colored editions, and they are pretty, but crap quality. (I’ve posted my disappointment about this.)

It would have been nice for them to do a CD reissue with the original artwork, as well. The only CDs available for all releases prior to Floridays are all the cheap MCA “Compact Disc/Compact Price” packaging with few or no liner notes. But I don’t see this happening at this point.

I have also emailed the Mailboat folks about future colored vinyl releases, such as a “Coconut” Coconut Telegraph, a “Sunshine” Floridays, and an “Iguana Green” Off To See the Lizard. They emailed be back saying they didn’t have control of these, and it was all up to UMe. However, they thought my idea was good and would pass it on. FWIW…

It would not be a surprise at all if MCA is lying about the albums being remastered since the masters were burnt up - they could simply take a CD, copy it, and use that as a master for pressing vinyl.

Oh and the remastered for vinyl? None of the Margaritaville Records albums were ever mastered for vinyl to begin with.

MCA is devious.

Why they would need to remaster the original vinyl masters for the reissues makes zero sense.

MCA is horrendous.

MCA handled Jimmy's catalog in 1985 with, well, not zero enthusiasm considering the ridiculous 2 albums on one disc (Two On One), usually minus one song. I had some. I don't know what happened to them. A few years ago I got someone the Margaritaville Records/MCA CDs and they were reissues - the inside artwork was black and white.

MCA is cheap.

While looking up information on those I came across an old thread here about the CDs and someone said not one release in either format (vinyl and CD) had the same information (vinyl HOT WATER with the poster, CD with lyrics. LIZARD vinyl no lyrics, CD had lyrics) but the original CD release of FLORIDAYS included a foldout lyric sheet with notes, so that's the only release that had the same info on vinyl and CD.

I'm wondering if jimmybuffett.com/live is ever going to show the concert rebroadcasts they've been advertising at the bottom of the video screen on the live page? I know they have plenty of shows from the Life On The Flip Side Tour and The Second Wind Tour because they were broadcasting them live when he did them. I know there are a few on YouTube but they're only a small handful of what probably exist. If anyone knows anything I'd appreciate hearing from you...summer's coming...

I thought he said there were not that many un-released songs.
He video taped freaking everything though. I bet there are thousands and thousands of videos that could be shown that would relate to song production, tour prep and insights into his worldly travels.
Seems weird to do so much recording of your life if you never intended for anyone to ever see it.
