Re: Jimmy meets crowd night before Today Show
That is a 5 STAR story! You lucky PH you! My feathers are turning GREEN (with envy).nycparrothead wrote:Here's the summary of the events leading up to, during, and after Jimmy Buffett meeting the crowd the night before the Today Show. These are the events from my tunnel visioned perspective and if anyone else that was there remembers any other details please share.......
At somewhere between 8 and 9 pm on Thursday night, there were around 15-20 of us sitting on the sidewalk on 48th street in our chairs and drinking our beverages of choice (Carrot Juice mostly I'm sure) chit chatting and preparing for the 12 hour wait before we would be corralled into the stables to watch Jimmy perform for the Today Show. All of a sudden a black SUV (an Escalade maybe?) pulled up. No one gave it much notice (including myself). Jimmy emerged and as he walked up to the sidewalk he said "Hey! What are ya'll waitin' for anyway?" At that point all you could see was dropped jaws and bugged out eyeballs. People began jumping up and down yelling "Oh my god, oh my god" etc... He posed for several group pictures and signed whatever we could think of to give him (many of us used dollar bills as that's all we could think of that we had). My brother was on his way there from Upstate but was still an hour away so I called him and held the phone up to Jimmy's ear while he signed my dollar and Jimmy said hello to him.
After 3 or 4 minutes 3 security officers escorted Jimmy back to the SUV. Before getting in, he posed for 3 or 4 more pictures with people. As he got in one of the guys with us yelled "We'll see you in Boston next month!" Jimmy replied "I'll be there!" After he got in he rolled the window down and gave a "Fins to the Right" as he was driven away. I think it was a good 4 or 5 minutes after that that any of us were able to say anything outside of "Oh my god, we just met Jimmy Buffett!" Then we all called everyone we knew from our cell phones for the next half hour.
I didn't realize until several minutes afterwards that a lady that was there from Miami, that I am now eternally grateful to, snapped a picture of me holding my cell phone to Jimmy's ear. This picture is in my avatar and can can be seen here -----> http://www.buffettfan.net/albums/album4 ... .sized.jpg
I gave my e-mail to the pholks that took the other pics and they said they would send them. I will share them with you all as soon as they arrive.
Thought you all might like that story as it symbolizes just how awesome Parrotheads are and how awesome Jimmy really is!
One last thing. I think I've found my latest addiction here at BN. I look forward to talking to other people that are as nuts as myself! Sail on Sailors!
Thanks for sharing!

That is so great that Jimmy was kind enough to stop to say Hi....however I wish he had been a little later. I took the train up to NYC to go to the Today show to see him and did not get to the line till about 10:30 that night....I was still only about 40th or so in line, however I missed my big opportunity to get an up close snop shot of Jimmy by about an hour However the show was great and I did have a pretty good view of the show. I think the Today show needs to have a little higher stage for the performers as well as a little smaller VIP section. The wait was not a big thing, the worst part of it all was the rain that began about 2:30. There was a great little bar just up the street that let us us the restroom and he made an terrific margarita I guess I will just have to keep dreaming of what I would do if I ever got that close to Jimmy....

I hear ya! A bigger stage would have been nice. And I couldn't believe that after waiting for 13 hours that there were still almost 100 VIP's (Very Ignorant People) in front of me! They didn't even come outside until just before Jimmy played for the show. During the warmup set at 5:30 they were probably still in bed! And don't even get me started on their friggin' umbrellas! I really need to make friends with a high powered NBC guy for next year and get the phlock in the VIP section!margarita_girl_PA wrote: I think the Today show needs to have a little higher stage for the performers as well as a little smaller VIP section.

A couple questions...
1. Did any of you see yourselves in the crowd on tv? Seemed they did a decent job of trying to include all the phans. I was looking for BN on the signs, but didn't spot any. Would have been too funny if LSP would have made the trip!
2. Was NYCPORT in the VIP section?

I did tape the show and when I watched it I was able to see myself about 6 times, one was really good, since I was standing directly behind Katie when she was out there talking on the platform before going to talk to Jimmy. I do also know that there were about 6-7 ladies in front of me that kept going on about how they were VIP's, however they were not in the VIP section, but right up next to the rail were the VIP's were..... They had just arrived about 5:30 or 6:00 and was put up in front of me in line, after I had been there at 10:30 the night before and stood in the rain, so of course I looked like crap on TV, and they were all fresh and dry. They had umbrellas that they were not going to put down and the rain kept running off of it onto me. I was not a happy parrothead about that but when Jimmy played it made me forget all the bad things. I think that was about the one thing that upset me most was I was there all night long and then they show up at 5:30 and are put un in the front of the line....how does that work????

Oh, now I know what the yelling was about. I got there at 2:30 am and was pretty far back (corner of 5th Ave), and then at 5:30 people were yelling "get to the back of the line" when I came back from the bathroom... I didn't know what for. But if people were cutting right in front - how was that allowed? Did security people try to stop them?margarita_girl_PA wrote:I did tape the show and when I watched it I was able to see myself about 6 times, one was really good, since I was standing directly behind Katie when she was out there talking on the platform before going to talk to Jimmy. I agree that even with all the adversity, it was so much fun and totally worth it!

Now that Jimmy knows you exist, I'm sure he will try to avoid you this time.....

Jimmy is actually ducking his head so he doesn't have to look at him.7lords wrote:Actually, the word you're looking for is ugly.cartmill72 wrote:Shane, nycparrothead wrote:I didn't realize until several minutes afterwards that a lady that was there from Miami, that I am now eternally grateful to, snapped a picture of me holding my cell phone to Jimmy's ear.
