Is this in fact true? I've heard convincing arguments on both sides.
I've done many concerts in ballparks over the years. The performers have always had a set price or the negotiable contract.

ie, Ray Charles........basic show $XX,XXX.00
1/2 hour longer............................+$XX,XXX.00
Sing specific "Hits"........................+$ 1,000.00
To 5,000.00
Incidentals (food,beverage, hookers) 1,500.00
________________
Total to artist....................................XX,XXX.00

Artist pays his people out of that and tour costs

Venue:
Cost of artis......................................$XX.XXX.00
Operating costs per opening X
Security/cleanup X
Promotion/advertising (including comps) X
projected needed profit X

divided by number of seats = Ticket price structure

We built in projected profit into ticket price, making added income from concessions, sponsorships (Continental Airlines Presents Ray Charles)
as gravey above and beyond. And this took into play weather affected shows.

Many years ago, I had it on good authority that Jimmy was over a Million per date in what he charged the venues. In a place like Alpine, that means approximately $28 dollars per ticket covers the Jimmy at that rate. If he is up to $2m then $56 etc. So I guess form your own opinions.

If the cutting of personnel went to keep the ticket prices down, I could somewhat see it but the combination of both is a little hard to understand.
How do you know that his overhead hasn't increased in some other way? The rising price of fuel for all those trucks, buses, and planes has to amount to a huge increase. Even with the reduction in staff, this tour may still be costing him more than last year's. We have no way of knowing this.
Point well taken.

Psst...I don't really believe any of that, I was just playing devil's advocate. My opinion is that he's grabbing while the grabbing is good, and I don't necessarily blame him for doing so.

Even if Jimmy is making 2M per venue, that still leaves about 2 1/2 M for the venue, to cover opening one day and expenses and profit. Nobody on their end is getting hurt and that is just off tickets. Imagine the sponsorship rights to both parties, Jimmy: Corona etc. Alpine: Miller Beer, MGD Miller Lite (ok thats all one) The Lienie Lodge, signage on and on and on.

Just because there's no horns, DOES NOT mean there's necessarily a reduction in staff. There may be other musicians/dancers/pole dancing strippers (wishful thinking :P ) taking their place....

Honestly people... if YOU were the one selling a product/service, and you could sell the same product/service for 20% more, with no decrease in the number sold, wouldn't you do it? The arguments that Jimmy somehow OWES us something because we're loyal fans are ridiculous....

For those that are saying the Venue sets the prices, then how come one artist can top out at $55 and another $126. Please do not say because they will sell more tickets...Please..Both Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews will sell the same of tickets amount as Jimmy...

Demographics would have something to do with it. Buffett attracts an older, and presumably wealthier, crowd than Pearl Jam or Dave Mathews.

What's being said is that the artist sets their fee for performing. The venue, in turn, then sets the individual ticket prices accordingly. My guess is that Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews are only charging half as much for performing as Jimmy does.

After purchasing the amount of drugs it takes to fry your brain so badly that Pearl Jam or Dave Matthews sound good, there simply isn't much money left for tickets.

Or, the venues are recognizing a cash cow, and charging appropriately...

No one is asking if you like the music of those two artist. The point is, they are charging half the price of Jimmy and they will sell out just as quick. Oh, also, both of those artist let people who belong to their fan club purchase tickets before the general public, something that Jimmy does not do. Plus, the longer you have been in the fan club, the better the seats you will get.

And to say that it's the venue who may be realizing that they have a cash cow, give me a break. If Buffett wanted to change it, he could.

ticket prices

Post by allucaneatbuffett »

my thought is this. This whole JB, parrothead, party ordeal that we all are having the priveledge to experience won't be around forever. We are witnessing, in my opinion, one of the best "performers" of our lifetime. Yes, there are plenty of good singers and performers out there, but none of them create the following and atmosphere like JB. The tailgate party and the theme, the concert, everything is an experience that we all look forward to each summer. Won't be long before we don't have that anymore. so enjoy it and soak it up. if you don't like the prices, THEN DON'T BUY THE TICKETS.. I personally didn't give a second thought to the ticket prices. Heck, we payed $86.00 last year for each. So the prices are $40 higher. Who cares. Will $40 affect your life in any way right now? Will it take food out of your kids mouth, or cause you to not be able to pay your phone bill? IF so, don't go. If not, go to the show, enjoy every minute, and party. I actually feel sorry for people who have never gone, don't know what its all about, and will never get to see him.
