I never really thought the lost verse fit the rest of the song.
Why?

The song is about denial and then self-realization told in the first person, I. That lost verse talks about old men in tank tops. It seems removed from the topic. jmho
I am not trying to argue with you, i just have never considered this idea. I will agree that if you had to cut a verse this is the one to go. But if you look at the rest of the song, it actually serves as a perfect bridge between the 2nd and 4th verse. In fact it is very similar in nature to the 1st verse. I think saying its about "self-realization" is reading way way too much into it, but that could be a whole new thread I am sure.

Never argue, just opinion.

I've always looked at the song from the last line of the chorus. "Some people claim that that there's a woman to blame, but I know it's nobody's fault" Last chorus "Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, but I know it's my own damn fault". To me is a guy that gets way too lost in a woman, gets way too lost in tequila, gets way too tattooed, just never figured how the old men in tank tops fit in. But then I too sometimes get way too lost in tequila...

My Spanish is pretty good, and what you're referring to is actually a great translation of the original lyrics. My understanding is that the translated version was done for the Margaritaville Tequila launch. This year at his live shows he seems to be doing a chorus in Spanish...probably just to mix things up a bit.

I don't think the "lost verse" was ever recorded in the original session. I remember reading that the song came together very easily and was cut in about 5 or 6 takes.

I was disappointed to hear Jimmy say once that he was happy to add the lost verse on TT&S until someone reminded him that it was also on YHTBT.

I agree although it makes a good story to say it was cut out.

I've been listening to YHTBT for damned near 30 years. I always thought the "old men in tank tops...." was the vision and thoughts the person sitting on his porch swing strumming his six strings was seeing. Like he woke up hung over notice, a new tattoo, looked arroud and saw what life was like in the tourist trap section on Margaritaville.... Or not.

Also while on the YHTBT album, the version on WDWGDAS has the altered line "I just bought a little good Columbian herb, gonna smoke it all me and you..."

If any of you have never listened to YHTBT get it. In my opinion it is the best live, if not the best album period. Dixie Diner is great, Morrises Nightmare is funny, Havanna Daydreaming is sweet. Hell all are fantastic.
Please don't say manana if you don't mean it.
