Still its got to s*** to be at the mercy of the incompetent.
((((Rabz)))). Thank goodness you made it home safely!Rabbitz wrote: ↑March 6, 2021 6:36 pm Well, that was fun. Not.
I woke up with a sore neck and a splitting headache, it felt for all the world like a hangover, except there hadn't been a big night and I wasn't dehydrated.
I pottered about for a while waiting for the headache to subside, which is showed no sign of doing. I checked the weather forecast and it is 1 or 2 inches of rain each day from tomorrow (Monday), so I thought as I won't want to exercise in that I'd better head out today (Sunday). Originally I had decided to wear runners instead of boots, but as I was putting my pack on I changed my mind, put on my hiking boots and grabbed my hiking poles too.
Had a quick scan of the map (I have no idea why as I have walked these tracks for near enough to 15 years) and decided where I would go. Down the road, around the back of the footy oval and further down a treacherous track to the gully, then onto a couple of quite good firetrails, pop out onto a suburban road at the top of the hill and wend my way home on the footpaths. About 50 minutes to an hour usually.
So, off I trot. Made it through the steep, slippery and rough bits and onto the wide, flat and driveable firetrails. I was about 20 minutes in when I stepped across a drainage culvert, slipped and rolled my ankle.
Thankfully I was wearing my boots and had my poles. The poles stopped me from going right over and the boots supported my ankle somewhat. I regained my balance and tried putting weight on my ankle, hmmm, that's not good. OK, take a spell and see if it calms down.
A few minutes later, it was better-ish. I tightened the laces on my boot and could get mobile. Just.
Then I had a conundrum, do I turn back which was shorter but had more difficult terrain or do I keep going on the longer, original route that would be easier to traverse? The longer way won out. So about 45 minutes after the slip I got home. I am so glad I had my hiking poles - they allowed me to reduce the load on my ankle and helped with balance/stability on my slow trudge home.
The headache was no longer a concern
So here I am, in the middle of the RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) looking at the stuff I need to do today and feeling thankful I made the last minute decision to wear the right shoes and take the right gear.
I am also making a new list to restock my first aid bag and will make sure it stays in my pack, because apparently, a first aid kit isn't any use when it is sitting on the shelf in the shed...
I never used to worry about things like that, it was great to be bullet-proofbodypainter wrote: ↑March 6, 2021 8:57 pm What a day two had!
Rabz I'm forever getting in harm's way fly fishing and sometimes think what happens if I snap a bone back in the woods. I try to be cautious, but that just means I'm falling slower.

I am not sure it could be described as sport, but it is for trying to regain a little of my fitness, lost during lockdown and working from home permanently.
Sounds like ya'll had a good day.SMLCHNG wrote: ↑March 6, 2021 10:38 pm

Penny, lots of people who live in rural areas with no gas lines use propane for heat and to run their gas stoves. We don't have any other option, other than all electric.SMLCHNG wrote: ↑March 6, 2021 10:38 pm <----- Color me confused - Rabz, are you doing this 'hiking' on purpose for sport?![]()
Geez, Tammy!! I had no idea that homes these days are run on propane!! I only thought that was for BBQ grills!!![]()
