Dad sent me down a couple of photos, amongst them was this.

Fun days hanging on the end of a winch cable with nothing but the loop under your arms...

It was a multi-agency rescue demo at Bathurst Ag Show in 87 or 88.

Surf Rescue (us)
5 Sqn RAAF
SES Flood Boats
NSW RVCP

They'd start by throwing thunderflashes (small explosive signalling devices) and smoke cannisters to get attention from a boat in the river (the showground PA helped too), once the crowd had assembled they would pop some more smoke and leap overboard.

We'd head in in a Kiowa (Jetranger helicopter) and the two SAR Divers (me) would step out backwards in full scuba to effect the rescue. Once we had everyone in the boat the Iroquois (aka Huey helicopter) would lumber in low over the showground and each diver would do two winches until we had all four 'patients' and both divers on board then we would head over nearby Mt Panorama and back to the showground for static displays.

I don't recall but Moogy was running around the cafe' naked again? Years ago, he was suspended for 30 days and asked not to do such prior to 11:00 PM

I had a fig leaf on.

I contacted the MSC Security department and they reviewed the survelliance camera videos.....confirmed it was you, but somebody had bumped the camera and it moved upwards. They couldn't confirm any fig leaf being worn. They are also questioning as to why you were behind the bar and servicing drinks. They are reviewing additional videos taken.

I hate to ask, but where is your mask?

I had forgotten that the photo existed until Dad texted me with it the other day.

Such fun times - I hadn't spoken to the other SAR Diver for a while (since Mum's funeral) and it prompted me to reach out and say Hi.

I remember the first time we worked with the RAAF (Air Force) crews they were a bit shocked that neither of us had any qualms about exiting an aircraft at 30 or 40' in scuba kit. We had cut our teeth doing that stuff with the Surf Rescue choppers and boats, so it was just a green helo rather than a red and yellow one

This the first helo I ever threw myself out of:



It's no wonder my body is falling apart these days. I also wonder whether if I could still take that step off the skids these day

Got up early and was at the dentist on time only for them to tell me that my appointment is tomorrow morning not today. I have been feeling like crap the past few days and when my hygienist asked if I was ok, I said no and started tearing up. I have not cried over any of this, but it happened at the freaking dentist over my mistake. SMH. Oh well, now I'm waiting to go to work and taking deep breaths and my eye won't stop twitching . I guess stress will do that.
Figured out the mix up happened because I set a reminder for the day ahead of the actual appointment.... Have a great HUMP DAAAY!

No matter how far you push it down, stress will show its ugly head when it's ready, wether you are ready or not.

My SAR experience is only ground. My time is spent in the trailer handling radio & helping put together tasks.

In my younger days I didn't really appreciate how much work goes on in the caravans, offices, radio rooms, workshops (the list id almost endless) to get a team on the ground, in a boat or in the air. When I started we did it all as required but the regulations and safety stuff is a little more front of mind these days (rightly so in most cases). We did it as an adventure not for a living and never really thought most of it through.

The truth is if any of the back up teams don't come through they the ones at the pointy end can't work as well or need to take more risks. So don't ever think less of those roles. Besides as I got older they did seem more appealing for some reason!
