"I Will Play for Gumbo" - WOW! Great tune. Nice "gris-gris" tempo, great lyrics. It's a little like religion and a lot like sex - you should never know when you're gonna get it next!

Come on people...every singer/songwriter who has a lengthy career evolves!!! You write about what is happening in your life at any given moment. A true fan appreciates this evolution. Of coarse there aren't going to be any more "Fins", "Margaritaville" etc. These themes aren't present in his life anymore. "Off To See The Lizard" had such a different style than any of his other albums...but is still a great cd. Appreciate him for the array of styles he plays and the emotions they incite. What other artist can pull off country, island, ballads and pop? As if you couldn't tell I love BHOTM. Can't wait for what lies ahead.

I can't believe how people have slammed this album. After one listen it became clear to me that this is better than Banana Wind and all its bummed out moodiness ("another shitty day in Paradise" and crap like that). After a more time I now think it's even better than Fruitcakes. Sure, it doesn't have any classics like Everybody's Got a Cousin in Miami or Fruitcakes, but it is a hell of a lot more consistent of an album. There are no songs to skip over (except maybe Math Suks, but even that's not as bad as stupid songs like She's Got You, Delaney Talks to Statues, and Mental Floss).

The songs compliment each other nicely like on Barometer Soup. The lyrics are laid back and pleasant like the good old days, and the musicianship is top notch. Though I was raised on the 70's Buffett, this and Barometer Soup are tasty classics from the 90's. This album combines his different styles of music more smoothly and naturally than probably any other album.

How can you put down songs like these?:
Waiting for the Next Explosion, I Will Play For Gumbo, Permanent Reminder of a Temporary Feeling, Beach House on the Moon, and Semi-True Story?

Well, as usual, the true fans have probably listened to this album and loved it and the Parrotheads have panned it for not being Volcano, Boat Drinks or whatever other expected loaded down the middle by the numbers typical Buffett tunes. I think what the Parrotheads should do is drop the attitude that he should be writing and recording like it's the 1970s. It's now the Twenty Hundreds and BHOTM was a great way to end the Nineteen Hundreds. Obviously the Parrotheads can't grow, unlike Jimmy, who has expanded his songwriting talents.

I think you are confusing "Parrotheads" with those who worship at the Church of Buffett, Orthodox... two very different groups!

When I first heard this CD, I thought damn! Jimmy's sounding like those old Perry Como albums mama used to play. Permanent Reminder reminds me of Mr Relaxation himself!

Then, to top that off, I hear that Jimmy didn't even pen the "autobiographical" Semi-true Story. Oursourcing songs about your own life to Mac?

The title cut and Gumbo still make it worth the cost, but I must admit that I don't play this one loud with the top down. Don't want anybody to think I'm jammin' on Como....

Who cares who wrote Semi-true Story- it is still a great tune and one of the best on the album ( oops- showing my age- I meant CD).

All in all I think this is a fantastic CD but I can understand why some aging parrotheads may feel disappointed. Usually these are the same type of people who bemoan everything new Jimmy puts out because it's not A1A. (For the record A1A is my favorite Buffett CD) I know not all or even most parrotheads are like this, but enough are. They are the ones who put the turd in the punchbowl when ever people talk about how much they like the new Jimmy tunes.

Face it, Jimmy is in his 50s- he would sound absolutely stupid if he tried to write songs like he did when he was in his 20s. Maybe that's why I like songs such as Semi True story, Flesh and Bone,Pacing the Cage and BHOTM. They sound like honest and thoughtful looks at life that may not have been appreciated when you're younger and your main goal in life is to party. But the best thing about the CD is how he mixes in kick a$$ funloving tunes such as Gumbo (another favorite), You Call it Jogging and yes, even Math Sux.

All in all, this CD is good stuff!I can't wait until his next one comes out!

Snake...I agree wholeheartedly...love the old stuff...from 25 or so years ago...but Beach House is outstanding...includes some of his most clever lyrics...and... as you say, is so reflective of his stages in life. All of us change..unless we're dead!

At first, I did not like this album. But after listening to it a few times, it grew on me (as it has for other listeners). I think it shows another side of Jimmy's music, that we would not have heard 10 years ago.

It would not be the first album I grab to tailgate with, but it is great to listen to none-the-less.

Ill be honest I really dont like this album. I think it was put out by JB just for something to release. In my opinion it shows a lack of imagination and the songs do not meld together as in previous albums.

Dont get me wrong I enjoy JBs music and collect memorabilia. But this cd did not live up to its expectations.

Maybe I havent given it enough time or listens to appreciate it.

I listened to Beach House On The Moon quite a bit when I first purchased it. But two years later, it doesnt get much rotation. It has taken a back seat to many of Jimmy's 1980s releases. Of the 13 tracks on the CD there really aren't any I dislike, just several I could do without.

I Really Like:

Pacing The Cage
I Will Play For Gumbo
Semi-True Story
Lucky Stars
Oysters And Pearls
I Don't Know And I Don't Care

I Kinda Like

Beach House On The Moon
Waiting For The Next Explosion
Flesh And Bone
Spending Money

I Could Do Without
Permanent Reminder Of A Temporary Feeling
Math Suks
You Call It Jogging

Overall 3 out of 5

This is one of Jimmy's bottom tier albums. I do like several songs on it, however, it's not anywhere near the top 10.
Then we landed in the water, just about my favorite thrill

Okay this is my opinion on this album.First of all its not even close in simlilarity with Fruitcakes, Barometer Soup, or Banana Wind like some of you suggest. The real problem with this album, I think anyway, is to much influence by Mac Macanally and not enough influence from the rest of the band. You gotta admit some of the songs like Lucky Stars, Semi-True Stories and Oyster and Pearls are very coutry and are more suited for a Macanally solo album. Especially considering what the majority of previous Buffett albums where circa 1985-1998 its very different and almost regressive. Not to mention the songs in my opinion, just aren't good or sound like takeoffs of previously recorded Buffett songs (ala W.D.W.G.D.A.S.)Secondly, I think Jimmy was, what I would consider "burnt out" at this point, which is fine, but instead of taking a break he decided to put out an album that I don't think he's even that proud of, considering the fact that most songs from that album didn't last the Beach House Tour and are very rarely played even now, if at all.Let's face it, what makes Off To See The Lizard,Fruitcakes,Barometer Soup, and Banana Wind so great is the fact that he wrote nearly all the songs with the other members of the current Coral Reefer Band or outside writers and they are more along the lines of what you'd expect from a Jimmy Buffett album. Don't get me wrong Mac Macanally is a great musician but I just think that Jimmy over the course of the last 5 years has relied way to much on Mac's writing ability instead of writing his own songs or, writing with other members of the very talented band he has. Think about, we all love Club Trini, and that music is written by them. When was the last time Jimmy wrote a song with Utley?Thirdly, Jimmy sounds and was in fact sick with a cold for the recording sessions for this album, which gives evidence of why some of us believe that this album was thrown together. Don't get me wrong there are a couple of good tracks on it, but overall the album is not on par of what Jimmy and the Reefer Band are/was capable of releasing. What's even more scarry is that the follow up Far Side, consists of 5 cover songs. And the soon to be released Buffett Buffet is a rehash of his old songs and "new cover songs"!Is it just me or is something not right with this picture? What the hell happened to the song writing?
