Author Tom Corcoran expertly captures the soul of Key West with all its eccentricities, secrets and progress in the expertly plotted Octopus Alibi. Corcoran's fourth novel works well as a hard-boiled regional mystery that shows the town's myriad images of both tourists and those who call the Southernmost City home.

A photographer whose work has appeared on seven Jimmy Buffett album covers, Corcoran translates those visual images to the printed page. He uses real places such as Baby's Coffee, Blue Heaven Restaurant and Louie's Backyard as landmarks and to add to the sense of realism. More importantly, Octopus Alibi sketches out an atmospheric view of Key West, from a ceaseless wind, a salt mist that lingers in the air and on the skin that never seems to cease, and the "endemic tear-downs and remodeling jobs."
