I'm just starting my new book called the "Octopus Alibi" by Tom Corcoran and it mentions Jimmy. A paragraph mentions that a boat load of Cuban refugees makes its way into a canal in Key West and lands in the back yard of Jimmy Buffett who offers them cokes, snacks and a shady porch and what they would have thought if they knew it was him. Does anyone know if this is a true event that took place. I really think i can see Jimmy doing that for someone in need. And if he did, now i know why i truelly admire him and try to get me kids to understand his meaning. Come to think of it, it might not be a bad way to meet him in Palm Beach. HAHAHAHAHA

Everybody's got a cousin in Miami...... fm "MVille.com" discography....

It was ninety miles to freedom but they took the risk
Though the ocean was all motion and the wind was brisk
The deadly gunboats never saw them in the pale moonlight
They were off to Cayo Hueso by the dawns early light
The gringo in the garden called the customs man
They answered all his questions, were allowed to land
The ladies shared a hairbrush and their husbands had a coke
Then they were taken up to Krome to meet with their kin folk

You betcha it's true.

I've heard this story before. I just got done re-reading Pirate Looks at 50. Does he mention it in there?

Definitely read about this but it was so long ago I can't remember where.
Might have even been in an interview.

Yes, it's a true story. It happened in 1993 or '94 at Jimmy's former house on the Riviera Canal in Key West. "Everybody's Got a Cousin in Miami" is partly about this. Supposedly, when Jimmy called the authorities, that's what one of them said about the boatload of Cubans who landed in Buffett's backyard: "Well, you know, everybody's got a cousin in Miami...."

It's a transcript of an interview Jimmy did with Larry King. He mentions the story in the course of the interview.
