Ah, your poor little oscar, Fins. I never heard about oscars til your posting, so I just looked them up on the web. What pretty coloring! Is 11in. a standard size? Desdemona's tank must have been huge!
Jimminy, your beer drinking goldfish story is so funny! That must have been cute to see.

Oscars as a whole are pretty cool pets, i swore Desdamona had moods and knew when i was around, i swear she hated my gf's and would always crap when they were around. i had a 75gallon tank which is good size for a college apt.
we had a funberal and everything when she passed, buried her in the courtyard of my apt. complex.
the next female pet i get no matter what will be named Desdamona

I believe it, Fins. I'm sure Desdemona had moods and was happy when you were around. That's funny about her jealousy towards your girlfriends, although I believe that was probably true also! That's sweet about her funeral. I found a small jewelry box with a nice lining. I wrapped Des in saran wrap, placed him in the box, and wrapped the box in saran wrap. I didn't want the cats to smell him and dig him up. I would have freaked out! My husband dug a hole (even though it was about twenty degrees and the ground was frozen) in the front yard under the window and we buried him there.fins26 wrote:Oscars as a whole are pretty cool pets, i swore Desdamona had moods and knew when i was around, i swear she hated my gf's and would always crap when they were around. i had a 75gallon tank which is good size for a college apt.

I'm not sure if I'd name another pet Des. My husband says I should get a turtle or some other animal that lasts a zillion years, or at least will outlast me, so I don't get so emotional when he dies. I want a dog, a Boston Terrier.

im looking for a dog myself, thats why i chimed in on this thread ultimately.
see if anyone can help me out on this one, i want an athletic dog i can take rollerblading, it must love water, not be huge and be able to survive days in an apt.
i was thinking about one of those australian herding dogs, ive heard there so smart u can train them to only go up and sniff pretty girls.
anyone have any breed ideas? money isnt a huge problem.

This is so wierd!!! I just picked up my puppy on Friday March 28 and I named her on the day she was born February 20. Her name is Lola!! I love that name. She is such a doll!! She weighs 2.2 lbs.!!! We have 2 extremes, a big 86lbs. black lab and Lola. It is always fun to have a brand new puppy. I picked a girl because I have a husband and 2 sons and the lab is a male. I am seriously outnumbered!! So, Lola votes for what I vote for and her vote counts!

Word to the wise, Fins: those herding dogs you're talking about have WAY too much energy to be an apartment dog. It would be torture to them live inside all the time. If your heart is set on buying a full breed dog, do your homework. A great place to look is on the American Kennel Club's website: http://www.akc.org/ where you can learn about the characteristics of all the breeds.fins26 wrote:im looking for a dog myself, thats why i chimed in on this thread ultimately.

Or PLEASE consider adopting a dog from your local animal shelter or SPCA. I've had some GREAT dogs who gave me TONS of love and TONS of fun that otherwise would have been euthanized.
Sorry, didn't mean to be on a soapbox. This is just something I care very deeply about.
But back to the subject:
WHAT DID YOU NAME THE PUP, MELLI??????

Great post. My wife and I just adopted a stray last week, and we had the same question. I wish I had discovered this place while we were trying to come up with a name. In the end, we too, settled on the name Hoagy. I thought I was pretty witty... I should've know that there would be a lot of Parrotheads out there who've used the same name. I guess we'll have to share!

I am ready to curse and spit. I just had a whole long post here, when I went to post it took me to login (although I swear I thought I already had logged in, but apparently not) and then it brought me back to this posting box AND THERE IS NOTHING LEFT OF MY POST!!!! Usually when I know I am going to another page to look up something I copy what I've written so I don't lose it (this has happened before). But I didn't think I was going anywhere, just posting. AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, the short version of what I had posted:
What Auntie said, but adding that there are rescue sites for almost every breed. Here's a link:
http://www.austinbostonrescue.org/. Even though it says it's for Bostons, go to the left and there is a selection box. You can put in dog, cat, horse, etc. and then select breed. You can select by zip code or say you'll look everywhere. Some are in foster homes waiting to be adopted, some are in shelters hoping not to be destroyed. There are pictures and descriptions and stories. Some stories are so sad. Like Mr. Buddy (I won't even described what happened to that poor little boy - but he's ok now and he has a new mommy person). Or a senior dog whose owners, who had him all these years, decided he was just too much trouble now. You want to adopt every animal on the list and give them the love they deserve!
It made me log in again - but this time I was smart and saved it. HA!

There are several breeds that could be considered Australian herding dogs: Australian Shepards and Australian Blue Heelers. As others have said, either one would be a bad choice for an apartment. I've had Aussies for years and although they meet several of you specs: athletic, love water, not huge and very, very SMART.....they would not make a good apartment dog. They thrive on and NEED a LOT of attention. You have to keep them busy physically and mentally or the situation could turn ugly.
My dog Taz (the name fits for sure) is one hell of a dog and is perfect for our situation, but it required lots of training and work to get him where we wanted him. He will play all day if you want, one of the best soccer goalies and frisbee players around! And he can take the rainy days as well but you have to keep him mentally busy so he doesn't get too bored. But anyone who has the time, space and desire for this type of dog, they are one of the best breeds out there.
