bar
You need to have palm leaf fans, bambo walls, and a official limbo court. that would be awesome.
I have heard you call, wanted to sail upon your waters since i was three feet tall.

any help
You need any help with anyone going into it with you. Like investing in it with you. I would be very intrested in it, and would gladly do it any day.

i'll be at pittsburgh too!Craiger wrote:Heh, thanks, St. Somewhere! I think Chandler is still looking for that job...
That last post probably came off a little harsh. I'm not a big bar-hopper, but I've been in a few in my time. I always make a point of going back to ones that seem more people-oriented rather than just about cramming in hordes of people and getting their cash as fast as possible.
So, anyone here going to the Pittsburgh show? I'll be the one wearing the Hawaiian shirt and grass skirt.

Mojito
Someone else also mentioned this one and I agree. Few bars even serve them and even fewer can make a good one (only one in my experience and that bodega is in Puerto Vallarta).
I make mojitos at home all the time, and everyone who has had one at my house loves them. I even grow the mint in the backyard now.
All this mojito talk has gotten me excited, I'm going to go drink now.

I was talking about Bar 11 on the South Side. It's a few blocks off East Carson. Ever been there?
Melli- do you have lawn or pavilion seats? I'm a Lawnhead myself.

this is what I really want to do with my life..open a bar on or near the beach. I just don't know how I'm going to go about doing it, but I guess I've got some time as I am only 21. Maybe once yours gets off and going, you can drop some knowledge on me and let me know how to get started.
Good Luck with it all.

Everyone has made some great suggestions, but I particularly second THESE emotions!Craiger wrote:Just a few suggestions off the top of my head:
1) NO F*CKING TV'S! I go to a bar because I want to socialize. If I wanted to watch TV while I drink, I'll stay home and get a six-pack. nothing bugs me more than going to a bar with 14 TVs and everyone in the place is staring up at them like slack-jawed zombies. If I'm paying extra to get my my drinks at a bar, I at least want to be able to enjoy them without having to hear "Friends" reruns or some college basketball game blaring in my ear.
2) For God's sake, keep the music down to a reasonable level. If you're a dance club, fine- blow the doors off w/ my blessing. But again, if you're trying to create an atmosphere for people to gather and socialize, please keep the tunes as BACKGROUND music.
3) Try to have something more in the taps than Bud and Coors. Everytime I go to one of these places w/ nothing but cheap crappy beer, I'm reminded of the classic line from "The Blues Brothers" when they show up at the roadhouse:
"What kind of music do you folks play here?"
"We have both kinds...Country AND Western!"
Sorry if this came off as a rant. I'm actually a very easygoing, laid-back guy. Really.

"Build it and they will come...." What I like in my favorite watering holes....
girls, coconuts and bikinis.
Extensive Tequila and Scotch choices...
Margarita menu...
Good but simple food....
I don't mind TVs as long as they are viewable only from a select few tables (not the bar) - you don't want to be empty during World Series games, etc.
Theme nights aside from you're overall theme (ie. All Buffett music all night, Classic Grateful Dead Concert night, etc....) grass skirt night, silly hat night.....
My all time favorite - Guest Bartender Night (ie. 1st Saturday of month, from 9 - 10 pm guest bartender(s) working - under the watchful eye of management of course). all proceeds during the hour go to charity....
If you serve a large variety of draft beers, have a beer club to encourage folks to have at least 1 of each - and give prizes when they complete the trip (my local favorite has an "around the world beer club" - 36 different drafts plus 24 bottles each from a different country - once complete - t-shirt, pint glass with bar logo and name on a plaque on the wall.
Birthday Club - send a b-day card to folks the month of their b-day to invite them in for a free beer for them and up to 6 friends or something like that......

Another great idea is a mug club. Patrons buy a mug and then, when they have drank X number sof beers, they get it personalized and then they have their own mug anytime they are in!!!
And a great drink recipe is the Key Lime Colada - a pina colada with KeKe liquor!!! Yummy!!!

With a tin cup for a chalice, fill it up with good, red wine

just curious to whether or not you are going to serve any food here, just like appetizers. I usually enjoy my happy hours with 2 for 1 appetizers, 2 for 1 beers, and 2 for 1 well drinks. Some appetizers I usually enjoy are buffalo shrimp, loaded fries(chili, cheese, jalapenos) and of course oysters.. anyway they come. I know Louisiana has some fine oysters.12 lb. nestle crunch wrote:man, these are great. from what it looks like right now, this will happen very soon. i just want you all to know that these ideas WILL be used. thank you so much, and if this does happen as planned, i will still put your names up somewheres in the bar, and give you a few on the house if you make the trip down here.
