THE PRE-PARTY MUSIC SELECTION?
Taking some greenhorns with me and my seasoned fello PH friend to an out of town show, we found this to be a big problem. I am of the opinion that we are at a BUFFETT party and only really need to listen to Buffett songs. If a little Marley or Jerry Jeff Walker somehow seem to wonder onto a compilation no biggie. But my friends took over the radio after and played Alan Jackson, Clint Black, and Maroon 5?....All fine artists, but....call me crazy. What is your take?

Well, I would have to agree with you that if you are at a Buffett party, you should play some Buffett music. I battle with my friends all the time about the music before the show. Of course, I always win and it is nothing but Buffett... Part of the Buffett experience for me is the pre-party and nothing can be better than listening to Buffett to get you going

a couple of years ago at irvine, i was setting up for a bbq, when in pulled a car load of youngsters. perhaps early 20 somethings. they started blasting rap music and proceeded to get drunk and otherwise. i talked to the yong guy who was driving and seemed to b in charge. i think they just saw a party going on and decided to go get something to drink and eat and have a good time. after a while they left.

I once thought that you shouldn't play music from the artist you're going to see at a pre-party, but that thought went out the window at my 1st JB concert. The seasoned phans should play some tunes that he won't be playing at the concert(check out the previous setlists to determine) and you can play SYKBH for the virgins to get them in the mood.
Note: If you want to play some artists other than Jimmy, be sure to play them first thing when you get there. After a few beers/shots, all I wanna hear is JIMMY!

We used to laugh at Grandpa when he'd head off and go fishing. But we wouldn't
be laughing that evening when he'd come back with some whore he picked up in
town.

I usually make compilation cds for the pre-party....There are about 24 songs per disc...That's 20 songs from Jimmy and 4 from other artists...in the past I've included James Taylor, Phish, Greatful Dead, Dave Matthews, Bob Marley, Little Feat, Jerry Jeff Walker, and several others...but they have to all complement Jimmy....I have had no problem with any complaints....In fact, people who walk by love it....It's good to mix it up a bit but it's got to be at least 80% Jimmy!!!

WDMS! We end up having at least a couple dozen compilation discs sitting around that are usually 80% JB and then Marley, JT, Little Feat, St. Somewhere, etc. are scattered around for good measure. Somebody usually brings along some Mac McAnally, too. And on my discs, at least, I try not to include what we know will be played that night.daddymention wrote:I usually make compilation cds for the pre-party....There are about 24 songs per disc...That's 20 songs from Jimmy and 4 from other artists...in the past I've included James Taylor, Phish, Greatful Dead, Dave Matthews, Bob Marley, Little Feat, Jerry Jeff Walker, and several others...but they have to all complement Jimmy....I have had no problem with any complaints....In fact, people who walk by love it....It's good to mix it up a bit but it's got to be at least 80% Jimmy!!!

Well it might be strange but here is what I do. The setlists that he is gonna play are usually avaiable here. So make a CD that is the setlist. I start playing this as soon as I get to the parking lot. This way i actually here all the songs that are gonna be played. Sometimes I get overly intoxicated at the show. Dont get me wrong, I have a blast, dancing around the lawn and what not, its jsut that parts are soetimes fuzzy
I also make compilation discs from other of my favorite buffet songs to play after the first disc. And yes Jerry jeff often makes into the mix as well. I mean Sangria Wine is just that kind of song.

At a buffett party, its gotta be mostly classic buffett tunes. However, Van Morrision, James Taylor, Little Feat, Bob Marley, are all awesome. I have a few cds of just steel drum music too as "interludes"
I don't know if anyone from the West is familiar with Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, but they are an awesome Arizona band. They sing about getting drunk in Rocky Point, sailing through the Pacific, etc. Its a little more rock and roll-ish, but it fits with the getaway mood of the party.
Ragtop- Fiftycent? we said a Buffett Party...
