Can anyone explain what this means? Seriously.

I've never had trouble with cookies before. I find the chocolate chip variety particulary easy to use. But I suspect this is not what PHJim is talking about. :-?

Here you go Auntie.. Pretty wordy, but it 'splains it.

A "cookie" is a small piece of information which a web server can store temporarily with your web browser. This is useful for having your browser remember some specific information which the web server can later retrieve.

For example, when you browse through an "online shopping mall" and add items to your "shopping cart" as you browse, a list of the items you've picked up is stored by your browser so that you can pay for all of the items at once when you're finished shopping. It's much more efficient for each browser to keep track of information like this than to expect the web server to have to remember who bought what, especially if there are thousands of people using it the web server at a time.

For information on how to set your browser to accept cookies, you can go to: http://help.netscape.com/kb/client/971020-3.html.

As you browse the web, any cookies which servers might send to your copy of Netscape Navigator are stored in your computer's memory. When you quit out of Netscape Navigator, any cookies that haven't expired are written to a cookie file so they can be reloaded next time you run Netscape Navigator. (On a Mac this file is named "MagicCookie", on UNIX it's "cookies", and on Windows it's "cookies.txt". You can look at this file with a text editor to see exactly what cookies are stored there, or delete the file to get rid of all of the cookies - this is harmless and shouldn't cause any problems.)

A cookie file is NOT a secret way for a web server to find out everything about you and what you have on your hard drive. The ONLY way that any private information could be in your cookie file would be if you personally gave that information to a web server in the first place and it decided to put that information into your cookie file for some reason. Also, each cookie is marked with information about what web server it's for; Netscape Navigator does not send any cookies to any web server they're not for. There is absolutely no way for a web server to get access to any private information about you or your system through cookies. Also, there is no possible way that a virus could be spread through the use of cookies.

To the left side is called the avatar...

Let's say you wanted this picture there:
Image

All you have to do is copy the URL address (you can get that from the properties of the pic by right clicking over it) like this :
http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:X ... 0beach.JPG
And paste that in your profile page.

What Penny said plus:
Some cookies can be malicious. For example credit card info can remain in a cookie and another site may be able to read it Most are harmless. Many track where you click so ads are geared from what you order and what ads you click on. In other words if you leave cookies on for every site and you have searched a certain widget or clicked on ads for widgets, then the widget ad will be sent to banners on certain sites(if you leave cookies enabled for the entire web. To me that's too nosey. Internet Explorer 6 has a function under privacy in options where you can allow sites of your choice to drop a cookie on your drive. Some sites delete it after you leave it. Others stay until you delete it. Cookies can be left in the Windows-cookie folder and also the temp internet folder. Also they remaini in the .dat file and you need to clean that out manually since it gets bloated. You don't need cookies on for Amazon dot com, they use this so they can give the illusion of one on one service. Many forums no longer need cookies on for you to stay on and this is one of them.

From the above site under cookies heading:
During the second stage, the cookie is clandestinely and automatically transferred from the user's machine to a Web server. Whenever a user directs her Web browser to display a certain Web page from the server, the browser will, without the user's knowledge, transmit the cookie containing personal information to the Web server.
