I got something in the mail today from Save the Manatee Club asking members to e-mail the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to show support for "new proposed speed zones in 3 waterways in FL where inadequate zones have contributed to boat-related manatee mortalities, injuries and harassment for years". The Club says that the zones are not yet finalized and that there "will be very vocal opposition from marine industries and boating goups".
Please send an e-mail by June 3, 2003!
Dave Hankla, Field Supervisor
Jacksonville Field Office
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
manatee@fws.gov
T
he subject line of the e-mail should read:
"ATTN: Proposed Manatee Refuges"
In the e-mail,
"I strongly support the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's proposed speed zones in the Caloosahatchee River, the St. John's River, and the Halifax/Tomoka Rivers, which will provide much-needed protection for manatees in these deadly waterways."
Please copy the following individuals on the e-mail:
Judge Craig Manson, Asst. Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks
U.S. Dept. of the Interior
Craig_Manson@ios.doi.gov
Sam Hamilton
Southeast Regional Director
Sam_Hamilton@fws.gov
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
They request that you also copy your congressional delegation.
You can find out who your congress-person and senators are by going to
http://congress.org and entering your zip code.
If you have a chance, please send an e-mail to these individuals!!
Thanks!!

Hi There:
I posted something entitled Manatees yesterday ... I am confused by your information, because according to my sources there was a boating group petitioning to take the Manatee OFF the endangered species list and therefore allowing a petition to INCREASE the speed limits in the affected areas.
There was a Florida Wildlife Commission hearing or meeting yesterday or the day before ... someone responded with a local Florida news article. Before we all send something ... we should know what we are saying 'yes' and 'no' to.
Very concerned about increasing speeds and traffic with all the deaths last year!
Thanks!
Thanks!

Again... a little invention called "Google" reveals that KYFlamingo's post is, in fact, correct.

trying to get the manatees off the endangered list has been an ongoing tactic to backdoor removal of boating speedlimits for a number of years now.....

Yes it has.........
certain boaters don't like the fact that they have to go slow in the channels!

My email has been sent. The individuals you wanted to copy to the email, you meant to send them a Carbon Copy, right? I hope that's it, because that's what I did.

Just a note to clarify...
The info I got in the mail asking people to e-mail the Fish & Wildlife was straight from the Save the Manatees Club.
I know there's a lot of news going around about different legislation regarding manatees, but the proposed speed zones I posted about is a current topic.
Thanks for helping!!

Done and done. Even in Wisconsin I realize the importance. My 2-year old daughter loves the stuffed manatee I got her last year and a picture of her adopted manatee is on the wall in her bedroom. Can't wait to be able to take her down to Homosassa Springs to actually see them.

I just wondering how many here actually are aware of the Speed Zone and Access Rights issues in Florida other than the info they get from Save the Manatee Club?
Am not trying to start any flames, just a few honest questions for everyone.
1: Would you believe that the Manatee is NOT on the edge of extinction?
2: Would you believe that the warm water discharges at Florida Power plants are in fact dangerous to large numbers of manatees?
3: Would you believe that there are far more Manatee than are counted by aerial surveys?

Not picking a fight.
Are you more interested in if I own a boat, how big it is, or answers to the questions?

Yes there are many more than what are counted. Do you know how many more the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates there are?

Does that mean it is okay if we run over them with our boats?

Before this goes much more along. Remember I just am asking honest questions.

I know but it's an
estimate hence, A tentative evaluation or rough calculation - not fact.
I don't want an argument either - I have my feelings on manatees - if you think it's more important to drive your boat fast and hit them, that's something you can deal with on your own, you won't change my opinion - I'd feel the same and support the protection of them even if they were as plenitful as snook.

I always was in favor of the zones....however....now that I live "by the water" and am witnessing some of the current politics up close and personal...I'm not so sure!

There is much more to this issue than speeding watercraft, unfortunately!
Also...no one seems to be concerned about the Piney Point contaminated water being dumped into the Gulf and its effect on ALL marine life...not just Manatee's!!! That contaminated water scares me to death!!!
Hi BN...long time no post!!
