I've read it. It's a really fun book and a VERY fast read. I still hope to do it someday, you need some serious cash stashed away in case things don't go well for the first year or so.

I looked for the book a few months ago and couldn't find it, thanks for finding it for me! I lived in KW back in the 70's courtesy of the Navy and knew I'd found me a home. My plan since then was to eventually move back but the cost of living has become so high. I have my sailboat and will go back to the Keys in 5 years, live on the boat somewhere between Marathon and Key West. Thats been my dream for 20 years and I'm going to make it happen, give me oysters and beer for dinner every day of the year and I'll feel fine, just hope my liver can handle retirement in the Keys! I wanna go back...to the islands.......

Last year was a wild year of layoffs for both my wife and I. I told her if we got down to having to sell the house we were moving to Key West and starting over. I meant it!

I dont know if this fits the thread but............... I once thought about quitting my job and moving to Las Vegas. I really hate winter and enjoy the heat. I have a friend out there who probably could have gotten me started too.
Then a girl at work said to me.... "yeah, great move, go raise 2 girls in a town where the only 2 businesses are gambling and legalized prostitution !!!". Needless to say, I still live in New York, lol

A good friend of mine lives in Key West. She's been there a little over a year. I know she loves it there but here are some of the "cons" that she tells me every time we talk and I tell her I'm moving.
*Her car and apartment have been broken into numerous times
*Living 24/7/365 in a town mainly driven by the tourist industry can really get on your nerves (I know this from living where I do, you do NOT get used to it)
*Most of the people that live there have to work 2-3 jobs just to be able to afford to live there. What good is living there if you don't have the time to enjoy it?
*You're far removed from the things you want to be away from, but you're also away from the things you take for granted and will miss.
*Hurricane season - sitting duck. Enough said.
Yes, you're living in paradise and the weather is always there. The people who live and work there take good care of each other. With them, it's still an "old town" feel. I LOVE Key West, I love everything about it. But I'm with the others who say they'd live up on another key and drive down for visits.

Thanks for the info 2fla! I'm looking into Marathon as well as the other Keys... heck, that's close enough to Key West for me!

Marathon is the place I'd pick too. If you get there before me, let me know! You see, I have this five year plan.........

Back when I had my real job, my wife and I had a late honeymoon there. While down there, we found a restaurant for sale right on Duval, but down the street from the real touristy sh*t. The guy was retiring and just wanted enough money to live out his life in his home country, I think Paraguay.
Anyway, this was when my boss was still cool and I mentioned it to him. Besides owning professional sports team, he was a psychologist. He offered to front some money, "If thats what you really want". Then he gave me this caution....
"Don't ever move to your favorite place in the world. First of all... It will never live up yo your expectations when you are there full time. Secondly, you'll find you never have the time for the things you moved there for".
Remembering the horrid days I put in when I had my first restaurant, I decided he was right. I wouldn't have seen any more of the Keys then I do in my semi-decade visits.
My advice, keep the Keys your special place

If and when I move back to Florida (would rather move to Charleston or Savannah) I will most likely land in Key Largo. Miami is just up the road, and Key West is a short (relatively) drive. When you have to evacuate for a hurricane, you don't have to go the 100+ miles just to get to the 18-mile Stretch.
My in-laws live in the Angler's Club in Key Largo. It's in an almost perfect location, though I'd prefer to be further south, just off of US 1, but far enough north to be in the triple digits on the MM.
