I was amazed at how many people came from far away; I live in NYC and so I had no excuse not to go! But there were people from Chicago, Virginia, Buffalo - driving in just for this event!

It did rain in the middle of the night. There was a huge downpour at 3:30 am, and it drizzled on and off until just before Jimmy went on, at which point they took down the tents and we could get the full effect.

The sound check was actually really great - he played Weather and Everybody's Talking 2x each, and Fins/Cheeseburger 1x each. It was like a little private show. The live broadcast was also really phun as Katie Couric is a huge Buffett fan. She also seems like a nice person, signing autographs and talking to specific people in the crowd. It was also fun when the camera would pan the crowd and everyone would wave and cheer hoping for a little air time. I thought the choices of songs were just PERFECT.

The only downer, and I thought it was a BIG downer, was the VIP section. Of course, I realize that life isn't fair that these non-PHs get to be up close even though they didn't wait outside. But they were totally obnoxious during the sound check putting their HUGE umbrellas up so the real PHans couldn't see a thing! Someone had it right when he shouted "Not only do you get to be up close, but you get to be dry too?!?" It was also kind of pathetic when I watched the TIVO version afterwards - they didn't know to do Fins and it just didn't look very enthusiastic. We in the back were ALL doing fins of course! Many of them were dressed very seriously, didn't know the songs, didn't even know Buffett from Adam. And to top it off, they got the most airtime! I thought the TV version didn't capture just how much phun we had in the back!

Verdict? A great great event, so glad I went, would never do it again. Every PH should do it once. It was a good Buffett fix that will get me through till Aug 30, Great Woods!
Thanks much for the review. You know that really does s***! ! ! If you don't know him DON'T GO or at least let his Phans be up front for him to see. He loves us as much as we love him! ! ! !
Well glad you had phun though. I hope to make it next year !

Now no work for you today, just tell your boss you are sleepy and will just take a few hour nap then go home.

Not too familiar with the Today show... who were the VIP's, and how did they get the good seats? Are they somehow related to NBC? You're not the only complaint about them.

Hey SmartWoman - Thanks for the review! Actually got up this a.m. at 4:00 a.m. to 'think' about catching a train. . and thought as I rolled over in bed. .I did it once! :D

Your review is exactly what I thought watching it on TV. Do they not know how to do Fins??? :o I called a friend of mine who was down there to ask what the crowd was like. He said it was Great!! The real phans knew the lyrics, did Fins and could care less about the rain. He was right behind the VIP section - which was larger this year. The "VIP's" are guest of NBC and it's affiliates. Jimmy et al. have their own VIP's and my friend said there were just a lot of 'guests' this year. With the exception of one guy in an orange shirt - who looked extremely psyched to be in that section - Wasted spots!

Glad you had fun! :D

it was discouraging back in 2001 watch the VIP's stroll in at 7:00am freshly showered and well rested :(

true! true! we said the same exact thing, except this year they were dry too! Oh well, the real PHs had MUCH more phun

By the way, Ragtop, thanks so much for your advice a few months back when this whole thing was announced. It was dead on. We got there at 2:30 am and although we could get a view of Jimmy if we craned our necks, I wished I had gone a little earlier to get less obstructed view. Today show should put him up on a higher stage, oh well.
Oh, the one pleasant surprise was that they didn't hoarde us into the corrals, or whatever they're called, until about 5:30 am, and so it was easier to come and go, and less time standing w/o a break.

Got in there around 2 am, parked at 48th & 5th ( thanks Lt John ) waited on line with a group from Bay Shore, NY, two towns away from mine, a fella from Wilkes Barre, Pa (wife went to school there), an off duty city cop who told his freinds coming in from Jersey to look for a 6' guy with a parrot hat, blue shirt, blue Lei, and grass skirt. Also a mother/daughter duo who drove down last night from Maine. Rain wasn't too bad, got in just before six and was three people from the rail between the GA, and the VIP area. A NBC photographer said the VIP area was for freinds and family of the band (saw Robert and Nadirah taking to some people in this area), and freinds/ family from NBC) The VIP's got shouted at several times to put down the umbrellas. Great time had, and the band sounded great. Wife called and said she saw me on tv 15 to 20 times, and taped it too. After the show as I was letting it clear out, I saw Mac, and Michael leave the building and walk down to a van on 48th St. I went over to the rail, and got to ask Tina, Amy Lee, and Peter for autographs but they said they had to catch the van. I asked Jim, and he signed my Club Trini cd insert. He thanked us for coming as well. He will be there on Sunday, but he said Mac won't be.

The show is broadcast from 7:00-10:00 AM nationwide. So, unless you are in the eastern time, it was not live. The central time zone saw it an hour late, mountain time two hours late, and pacific time three hours late.

I agree totally. It's something everybody should experience once, but I doubt I will ever return, especially knowing now that the area between the stage and the boom camera was all VIP  . Soundcheck was the best part by far, good Jimmy/crowd interaction, felt like a private show for those that waited all night (which really wasn't that bad, despite the rain and constant parade of garbage trucks, half of which oddly smelled like city hot dogs  ).

You know who these VIP's are?
They are the rich people who don't know how to have a 'good time' unless it's stepping on some 'little person' and bossing them around, making them feel like poo-poo!
And the reason why they're there is because they have heard such crazy and unbelieveable stories about this god-like phenomenom, and it's not them so they have to see who it is!
Listen, we're lucky peeps! :D
Let them see 'god' before they die!
We've already been to Paradise!! :pirate:
