Reissue JB CD's

Post by Parrothed71 »

Does anybody know if JB will reissue his MCA albums? Maybe remastered with full colored booklets like the original albums. I dont know how many ppl would double up on their collections but I would. What do you all think about this.

Hello fellow parrotheads! I’m a newbie and this is my first post.

My dad has been buying Jimmy’s CDs since Songs You Know by Heart and has them all from that point with the exception of Hot Water and the boxed set. I listen almost every time he plays them and have enjoyed every song. Just recently I have decided to dig deeper into Jimmy’s catalog and purchase all the CDs that came before my dad started collecting (White Sport Coat – Last Mango). I got Changes first because of all the positive reviews. I’m sure glad I did, because it’s a seriously good album.

But as I started on my collection and started looking through the CD racks at stores, I noticed how the back tray inserts of every CD I needed had the same boring background (just in different colors) with a simple track listing. I knew there was no way this is what the back of the original record sleeves looked like :-? , so I decided to search the net for pics of them. I went to eBay, where most people just photograph the front covers of the albums they are selling, but some provided many more pics, including the backs of Changes, Sailor, Havana and Volcano. The artwork I saw was awesome. I discovered that MCA had a series called “Compact Disc-Compact Price” in the early days of CDs and had no respect for the original artwork that came with the vinyl albums, and Jimmy wasn’t the only artist who’s CDs were effected. I did some research and found out that Elton John and Steely Dan had CDs in that series, but those editions of those particular CDs have gone out of print and re-mastered reissues with the original artwork have taken their place.

So yes, I do hope the same thing happens with Jimmy’s MCA albums. Re-mastering and adding bonus tracks is not necessary (but would be nice), but restoring the original artwork is. :)

It's not Jimmy's decision.... MCA owns 'em so MCA would have to decide to do it.

Exactly and i don't think there's a real good relationship with Jimmy/MCA, so i don't think it will happen. :D

Welcome, Parrot Monkey! As you can see, I just joined last week after being on this planet for 50 years, thirty of those a hardcore Buffett fan! Your dad has taught you well!

No question, I'd buy 'em all again reissued -- hell, I've framed a couple of my covers from old vinyl that is no longer even playable! :wench:

The problem is, his catalog still sells. That's like found money to a record company. Remasters usually come when someone's catalog has really started to drop and needs a "shot in the arm" to renew interest. Having said that, MMIM may prove to be a catalog killer and certainly showed that fans are willing to buy music they already own While I would love to see it happen, as long as JB keeps winning new fans, who buy all his old albums, seems a bit of a long shot. I can hear them now; "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Exactly. MCA is making money on the existing artwork/package. Why spend $1000s to remaster and redo it when they're already making money.

Again, remember most labels are not forward-thinking entities. :D

MCA had actually started doing some re-issues a while back, but I think they only got as far as producing gold masters of SYKBH and A White Sportcoat And A Pink Crustacean. :(

I think re-issues would be a cool idea. My parents have some of Jimmy's albums on vinyl and they have great pictures and things inside them. If MCA had just taken the time to add these into the CDs it would have made a big difference.

Right. We buy them because they are the only editions out there. We either buy them or do without the music.

I don’t think we should count those. I’ve see pics of the front cover to Sport Coat, and it made the artwork even worse by shrinking the cover.

Wow, I haven't been on here in a long time. It's good to be back. And welcome Parrot Monkey - if anyone here has said welcome to your new addiction, listen to them. And if no one has, then "Welcome to your new addiction!!!!"

Why don't you just find the original "albums" - you know, LP's or those shiny black round things that people used to play on phonographs. I started doing this awhile back. You just need to find a record store that carries them.

The original albums are awesome, especially if you find ones with the original sleeves. Good stuff - just a thought.

But if you start getting lp's like i've done recently, make sure their orginal versions. You can tell this because every album up to Havana Daydreamin was on ABC/Dunhill, and the MCA ones have gold stickers on them if they've been reissued.

Good info Bamafan - thanks. I'll have to check some of the old albums I've been buying.

I went to your site and something is wrong with your links. They didn't take me where they were supposed to. Just a little heads up.

Doing a better job on the printed material is not the only thing that comes with CD reissues. Remastering is also commonly done to make old recordings sound like they were recorded recently. Examples of remastered JB songs can be heard on MMIM. Second, adding bonus tracks. Demos, alternate takes, cut songs. With CILCIA, I can think of two more possibilities for bonus tracks: the short acoustic version of CILCIA that was mentioned on the album review forums and the uncut version of Margaritaville.

I think the fact that MCA owns all of the early albums really stinks, as I honesty don’t think they will do reissues.

If I could just get some flat scans of the artwork form the records, I could import them into a program I have called Mediaface, print them out on blank tray liners and put them inside the jewel case. Problem is, I can’t find a place on the net that has flat scans. :-?
