my grandfather always said how amazing it was that in his lifetime the the wright brothers flew for the first time and man walked on the moon.

I was just 4 months shy of being 8. I was actually at my granma's house in Long Island with my family. We packed up a bunch of food and headed to the beach on the Long Island Sound for our annual clam bake. My father being a deep sea fisherman went to the docks and got a free basket full of fresh lobsters and a few hundred clams and we cooked it right in a pit on the sand. After we ate we all laid on blankets, looking up at the sky and told stories of what each of us thought they would find when they landed on the moon.
Life was so wonderful back then, no worries. Now we grow up to be parents and hold the worries of the world on our shoulders to protect our children. At the time I never realized that was what it meant to be a parent.
Thanks for letting me remember what a great childhood I had.

Time flies. I was 6 then and my wife was -3. I remember seeing it on an old B&W tv.

I was only one at the time. Don't remember a damn thing. I seem to say that alot these days.

I lived on the east coast a few minutes from KSC, watched EVERY manned launch. It made such an impression, I eventually went to work there and worked on the shuttles for 21 years! Lots of fun and very fullfilling. Finally got to meet one of my child hood heroes... John Glen, I retired shortly after that mission. If you ever have the chance to see a launch live from KSC - Do it! The rumble and sound of a lift off is one you'll never forget.
