5 O'Clock in Margarittaville, but not Somewhere

I hadn't heard the Jackson / Buffett song until I saw it on CMT and it's a very catchy tune.

"It's only 1/2 past twelve, but I don't care. It's 5 o'clock somewhere..."

Jimmy corrects him in the song. It's always 5 o'clock in Margaritaville.

But after the song was stuck in my head for a while I realized that if it IS half-past where you are, it's unlikely that it will be 5 straight up somewhere else. With the exception of some small 1/2 hour-off time zones in Asia, Pasific, and Alaska, all the zones are 1 hour apart.

It would be kind of fun to figure out where in the world Jackson could be "working" in order to have it be 5 O'clock somewhere!

Fins up! See you all at Great Woods!

As was discussed in the other five o clock thread, the implied meaning is that it's AT LEAST five o'clock somewhere, meaning it must be after work somewhere and time to drink.

If you take it literally, that would imply that you're only allowed to drink while it's five o'clock but before 5:01 because then it wouldn't be 5:00 anymore. And that would be silly.

You are technically correct. I think Newfoundland is on the hour when everyone else is on the half hour though. But I think that you are being to literal. The song wouldnt be nearly as catchy if they sang "it's at least 5:00 somewhere". ha

"It's 5:00 somewhere" is as much a state of mind as Margaritaville. That state of mind is temporal, as well as geographic. If you're a parrothead, no matter where you are or WHEN it is, you can drink w/o guilt!
