Northeast Blackout

Hey --
Any other PHs out there in the dark on Thurs/Fri? The blackout here in NYC was pretty crazy. After my husband and I realized this was truly an accident, and after we climbed up 19 flights of stairs 3x (don't ask), we asked ourselves, "What would Jimmy Buffett do?" and proceeded to drink most of the alcohol in the house, as well as engage in some traditional blackout activities. (i.e., WDWGDAS

-- Sorry if that's too much info, but really, what else was there to do?) Luckily my iPod was fully charged and of course, chock full of Buffett tunes, so it was actually kind of a fun incident! And an unexpected long weekend in August - who can ask for more?!?! I think NYC needs this type of thing every now and then - forces everyone to blow off their deadlines, slow things down and just RELAX for once in their lives!
Any other PHs out there care to comment??!

NO, please, we do not need this type of thing AGAIN
I don't want to walk another flight of stairs ....... My office is at the top of the Empire State Building and we all walked down from the 79th floor. I felt so bad for the old , heavy and out of shape people. Had to offer lots of water and support to the one's breaking on the stairs. Hard to motivate people to walk down stairs in a hot, very hot stairwell .....it took some an hour to get down. Then we get to the street and there are mobs of people around 6th avenue and the sun was of course out! A colleague of mine lives in the area and we waited outside his apartment and suprised him when he finally walked in the door. Most of us live on the Island or in NJ. Then our colleague suprised us by saying his apartment is on the 40th Floor ! Hmm..just walked down 80 why not go back up halfway
Then back down Friday morning 'cause there was still no power.
The worst is for all the thousands that were stuck in the subways and had to walk the tunnels to get out and the LIRR (Railroad) also had many trains stuck in the tunnels which run below the river....scary sh$t. In addition to that there were many stuck in elevators for many hours with no lights and no air....more scary sh&t. But of course when we listened to the radio Thurs night Mayor money bags Bloomberg was saying how things are normal, all ok and everyone is cooperating very well and orderly..Orderly (when we hit the street after the walk out of the esb there were hundreds of people trying to jump on the buses. One bus was very full and the driver took off....a few feet more about 50 people were banging on the bus rocking it... a few more minutes it would have went over. The driver stopped the bus opened the door and had some pleasant words to say....it worked and he left safely.
It was very peaceful and erie when we were at the apartment for the night. We went to the rooftop and viewed the city. 10 blocks north of us there were building with lights and also downtown had electric. Very frustraing seeing that. But look east over Laguardia airport and the Island it was pitch black. Very strange. Saw the stars and the moon and got some rest with helicopters circling all night long. Hopefully a once in a lifetime event.
Looking forward to VEGAS
