I guess it depends on WHAT you were smoking
But in all seriousness. You do have a right to smoke. Just from a non-smoker be as courteous as possible around those that don't. I can not speak for anyone else but sometimes cigarette smoke makes me nausious. He was still wrong to push you around.

i personally don't smoke, and i think its kind of icky

, but i also find it hard to believe that you were uncourteous about your smoking, and you certainly did not deserve to be treated so rudely... i am shocked that a true parrothead would go to the extreme of physical violence over something as trivial as a cigarrette, especially at a buffett concert, a place to relax and enjoy yourself! if it bothered him that much, there were more polite ways he could have said so, and God forbid, he think of moving a few feet to the side to avoid the smoke... even though i don't particularly like being around smoke, i respect other peoples right to do it in authorized areas...

you know, i always thought it was just me.... no matter where i go - restaurant/club/concert, within like 5 minutes someone right beside me will light up. even in a restaurant, there may be only 2 people in the entire place and guaranteed someone will sit next to me and light up. it's like murphy's law for smoking. the more you dislike it, the more if finds you.

Hi all,
Just had to throw my .02 in on this one!
I absolutely cannot stand cigarette smoke, but my friend's little boy has asthma attacks that are so bad he's almost died from them. Whenever I'm around this child, I make a point of finding any smokers in his vicinity and advising them of his condition. I have yet to find a smoker choose his habit over the child's life.
Without the little boy around, yes, I have run into some rude smokers - but smokers are people, and in any group of people, there are bound to be a few that were *seriously* underdone in the cosmic oven....
JMHO,
Deb.

I agree that the fellow behind you was a jerk to shove you.

A simple request is a much better way to handle the situation.
That said, I have to admit smokers at a crowded concert make me very nervous. They keep swaying around or getting jostled by those going out to the concession... Besides not liking to have smoke in my face (another allergy sufferer here) the possibility of getting me or my clothes burned is not at all appealing...
At the indoor concert in Detroit a couple of years back, smoking was prohibitted, but it didn't stop the people who were sitting both in front and in back of me from lighting up.

While at the show in Cincy, the pavilion is a non-smoking area. But, of course, people were smoking....
They were not letting anyone bring anything into the venue, but I had my inhaler in my pocket---thank goodness.
About 5 minutes into the show, people in front of us started to smoke and I had to use my inhaler.....
I didn't hassle them, even though I wanted to......thank God for asthma inhalers!

I am a smoker of close to 14 years now..... Yes I do smoke when I go to concerts, maybe a little more due to the fact that I am drinking. Its kinda hard to ban smoking in a out door venue---unlike a indoor venue, but usually the only ones that ban smoking are the hockey and basketball arenas because they have seats.
