September 20 marks the untimely passing of Steve Goodman an early friend, influence & collaborator of Jimmy Buffett. Steve wrote for JB:

Door #3 -- A1A
This Hotel Room- Havana DayDreamin
Banana Republics- CILCIA
California Promises- OPH
Frank & Lola- Last Mango

Steve died at the age of 36 in 1984. It was the highlight of the Tinley Park show on 8/23 to hear Jimmy remember his good friend, dubbed Chicago Shorty, the man who wrote- "City of New Orleans".

Not to mention he wrote "the perfect country and western song."

I saw Steve Goodman with John Prine in Seattle. It was Steves last concert in Seattle. Me and a buddy had 2nd row seats way way way over on the left and it is one of my most favorite concert memories of all time.
Steve passed way too soon.

He also wrote Elvis Imitators which I know a lot of you dislike intensly but I love it.

It was great when Jimmy played This Hotel Room in Chicago.

While I don't care for JB's version of Elvis Imitators I can't say I really dislike it.

Steve wrote the Cubs fight song- "Go Cubs Go". I think it was Banana Republics that made me a JB fan.

David Alan Coe (an enemy of JB) had a big hit with Steve's "You Don't Even Call Me By My Name". Small world.

You will surely enjoy the live video from ACL of Steve Goodman.

It is so touching. He also talks about his Cubbies and the song "Dying Cub's Fan Last Request."

The whole dvd will make you laugh, dance, cry, sing! It is one of the best dvds ever!

Being that Jimmy is in Vegas on that date....I wouldn't be surprised to hear Elvis Imitators as an encore that nite in tribute to Steve.

I am a huge Steve Goodman fan having seen him play at my alma mater (grinnell college in Iowa) and then several times around Chicago. THose not familiar with his stuff should see the video and get the 2 disc set that has the live disc on it to really get a sense of his wonderful sense of humor.

And I remember so vividly the irony that he died just as his (and my) beloved Cubs were about to clinch the division for the first time in years.

Goodman, thanks for reminding all of us-Steve was terrific, and as I have commented elsewhere, I so appreciate that Jimmy always remembers his friend when playing Chicago.

As I understand it, Coe's "Diver's Do it Deeper" is a semi blatant ripoff of Margaritaville. Quiet attempts by JB's folks to get Coe to cease and desist, or even pay I assume never worked. The case of a lesser artist exploiting his ability to beat the system. I don't think JB has ever let that stuff slide since.

Other than that both are written in English, I see very few similarities between "Divers" and Margaritaville. Dunno if JB saw similarities there or not, but something sure p*** him off...

I think Coe also wrote a song called Jimmy Buffett Don't Live in Key West Anymore.

He did in fact write that, and it's not a very flattering portrayal of JB. I think it was in response to something from the Buffett camp, but I was never able to ascertain what that was.

Kick it in Second Wind reminds me alot of a DAC song. I met David at a swap meet at Daytona Beach some 8 years or so ago, seemed to me like a gritty, p*** I did'nt make it so I have to work this kind of small time crap, live in a bus.. kinda guy. LOL

As suggested I have ordered the ACL video of Steve. I look forward to seeing him "live" for the first time.
BTW JB's pictured on "Somebody Else's Troubles" a very good album. If you ever hear Steve's Chicken Cordon Bleus you won't wonder for long where JB got "Cheeseburger in Paradise".

If you listen to the song it becomes obvious it is in response to critics calling him a JB wanna be. I personally don't think there is anything bad about the song. I especially don't believe Coe is badmouthing him, in fact at one point in the song he states "someday Jimmy why don't we both get drunk and screw" which (and I may be way off base here) I take to mean he would like to do a duet with JB.

I need to check my files and the treasure chest but wasn't that Coe in Deliverance? I don't think he'd be Jimmy's choice for a "duet". :-)

Correcting my prior answer- it was CILCIA not Margaritaville that Diver's supposedly rips off.

Goodman, you will enjoy watching him perform-his offbeat sense of humor (which you certainly find in his songs) is really present in his live performances! I was a huge SG fan long before I discovered Jimmy, and, as I have said before, I treasure the fact that Jimmy always remembers his good friend.
