Scans of Album Artwork

Post by Parrot Monkey »

Does anyone know a place on the net that has flat scans of the packaging that the original JB records came in? We all know what MCA did with the CDs, and I am curious to see what the artwork that is missing from the CDs looks like.

Well, I guess no one knows a URL. eBay seems to be the only source. The lost album artwork would be a great thing to dedicate a website to. Flat scans would do the best, which would be a lot of work due to the fact that album packaging is quite larger than the average scanner. You would have to scan parts at a time and then put it all back together on screen. I’m too young to have lived in the vinyl era, and my parents didn’t hear of Jimmy until we moved to Florida, which was well into the CD era, so we own no JB records.

Sorry if anyone thinks I post to much about the terrible job MCA did on the CDs, but things like this bug me that much and I think something has to be done about it. In the new version of Son of a Son of a Sailor on MMIM, Jimmy makes a reference to the amount of money it cost to do an album cover back in the day. I’m sure all the other artwork and pictures that were included in the old albums cost him a pretty penny to do also, and I would assume he’s not to happy about what MCA has done to the beautiful packaging of 13 of his albums. I really hope this is at least part of the reason Jimmy said adios to MCA and started Mailboat. My family and I have so many albums on CD that were originally issued on vinyl records back in the day, and all of them (with the exception of CILCIA and Steely Dan’s The Royal Scam, both victims of MCA’s Compact Disc, Compact Price, Compact Effort” series) have all the original artwork present. Is it that hard to do MCA???!!!  I bet MCA was thinking, “aww, its only Jimmy Buffett, we don’t have to put that artwork with the CDs”. But if they had someone like The Beatles catalogue in their hands and it came time to put the classic albums on CD, do you think they would have done the same thing? Every time a look on eBay and see a piece of artwork I have never seen before I go insane.

Again, sorry that I post too much about this subject  , but I know I’m not the only PH how is POed. The purpose of scanning the album packaging would be to import the scans into programs such as the Fellows’ Mediaface and print them out on the blank inserts so we can have the artwork with our CDs.

Don't have scans, but...

I don't have scans of the original artwork, but I could probably take pretty decent photos of the original artwork of many of the albums if anyone is interested.

Let me know.

Sure, if you have the time. I said scan because it would definitely result in the best quality, but I have to remember that vinyl packaging is rather large compared to that of CDs and would not fit on a scanner. Do you have White Sport Coat, ¾ Time and Last Mango? Please photo them if you do. I have yet to see any artwork other than the front covers of them on eBay.

You’ll be doing us younger PHs and those who just didn’t know about JB in the vinyl days a huge favor. :D

Its not the prettiest photo taking I've ever done. But for an hour's work, it ain't bad. Here's what I have in my collection (minus Coconut Telegraph and Somewhere Over China - they are framed on my wall). I've done 5 from ABC Records, 1 from Janus/Barnaby and 4 from MCA.

Again, I'm sorry about the quality, but you'll get the idea at least. If I had a giant flatbed scanner they'd be better. But my scanner just isn't big enough.

Make sure you click "Start Slideshow" - you'll get bigger images :-)

Not the prettiest work? These pics are awesome! :D You rule! :D Thank you for taking the time! :D I appreciate it! :D I’m now even more angry at MCA…

Interesting stuff… I’ll let MCA slide on some of the stuff, such as the back of White Sport Coat (all the lyrics on the back). That kind of stuff just can be done on CD printed material and has to be turned into booklets. Even Floridays is different!! Although they did decide to put a picture on the back of the CD (surpassingly) they only show the parrot instead of the whole picture!
