I am heading from Pittsburgh to N'Orleans for Halloween weekend. For you Margaritaville veterans, is there any food/drink in particular you recommend from the Cafe? Also, other than the regular debauchery, any suggestions on what to do in the day before things get absolutely crazy?
Choices...

Hmmm... I'm looking at the menu I scarfed when I was that MV.....Oh wait it's just a drink menu....Order me Jimmy's Perfect Margarita please ($6.00). Also try to spend some quality time spent at the Crescent City Brew House on Decatur St. in the French Quarter. Try the sampler tray of their beers, all of them rock.
Copeland's is a great Restaurant if your up in Garden district.

Whatever you do make SURE you don't eat within several blocks of Bourbon Street. The gumbo in that area sux. I also recommend Crecent City Brewing for a good BUZZ. Also, Marie Laveux's Voodoo Lounge is right there with Crecent City. Find it, I spent a few drunk hours there with Cuervo. Be sure to take in the river walk area where Buffett was sitting one morning and wrote "In the Shelter".

A few years ago when I went to Margaritaville in NO, I loved the music but the bartender had no idea what I was talking about when I ordered "The Perfect Margarita" What a disappointment.

best place I've eaten cajun seafood is De Ann's, 7338 Hayne 504/244-0262. Local spot - not a tourist attraction.

Funny story - I went there for Y2K, and also ordered the ""Perfect Margarita." Actually, they were real busy so I ordered 4, two for me and two for my wife. The waiter told me to be careful because "they are real strong. They are made with 1800 proof tequila." I then tried to explain that 1800 is not the proof but merely refers to the name of the Cuervo tequila supposedly in the margarita, but the server wouldn't listen and actually argued with me over this issue. It was hilarious.

Margaritaville New Orleans has a coupon in most of the tourist brochures
giving you a coupon for buy 1 get 1 free drink with each entree.
I, too, would recommend the Crescent City Brewhouse. Their
sampler of 5 or 6 brews was quite good.
Dnot' froget the Tropical Isle which has an entire upstairs
devoted to Buffett and Parrotheads.

Personally, I blame Cuervo.
(no idea if I'm in the right thread for that or not, but just felt like saying it)!

From what I have observed there is no wrong thread in which to lay the blame on him.

Check out the Voodoo Music Experience and see if any of the people performing are of your liking:
http://www.voodoomusicfest.com It's playing that entire weekend and I think you can buy just single-day tickets.

Heres some advice from a new orleans area native
at margaritaville - the drinks are really strong, but they are not the best. i hate to say this, but jimmys perfect margarita isnt perfect (dont hurt me!). i usually get a mojito or a beer. if you want an expert opinion for a drink, ask jay the bar manager for some advice. the "why dont we get drunk and screw" will have you losing your sea legs in no time. for an appetizer, get the spicy creamy crawfish dip, just trust me on this one.
after your meal (and shopping) at m'ville, it might be interesting to take a walk to jimmy's old apartment. its only 2 blocks away. the address is 616 ursaline street.
the french quarter- ok, a lot of gentlemans clubs, loud bars, etc. there are 2 tropical isles on bourbon street. the normal parrothead would only want to go to one of them, the one on the corner of Bourbon and Toulouse St.. the other (and much bigger) tropical isle is more for a younger crowd. its much more rowdy, and you wont hear any buffett. chances are you'll catch the buffett-cover band "Late as Usual." check them out. they arent the best, but when your drunk, there is nothing better than singing along with live buffett music (unless its jimmy himself).
if you find yourself walking on bourbon st. (away from the tropical isle) and you get to a club called "OZ," dont go any further, your in the gay/transexual area. unless your into that sort of thing.
other things to do in new orleans: for a first timer, i would really recommend going the audubon zoo and the aquarium of the americas. you can get a discount if you get a pass to both, and a riverboat takes you down the river to the zoo and back. harrahs casino is HUGE, but bring your deep pockets - the minumum bets are pricey.
if you have any more questions, please let me know. PM or email me. heck ill even give you my cell in case you need some on the spot help.
hope this helps and enjoy your trip

I lived in New Orleans for four years, and just returned to Charleston, SC. In N.O. you need to be sure to check out Royal Street and Jackson Square on the weekend, the street performers can be really entertaining for either their talents or total lack thereof. You should try to hook up with a cemetary tour, your hotel will have info on this. As far as restaurants, you can't go wrong if you ask around. The quarter is home to some of New Orleans' best (Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, Mr. B's Bistro, K-Paul's, NOLA) as well as some fantastic dives (Deja Vu has a great cheesburger). When Jimmy visits he usually stops in at Mother's (corner of Poydras & Tchoupitoulas) for Po-Boys (try the Ferdi) & Gumbo. If you want to take the streetcar down St. Charles (and it is a beautiful ride past the Garden district, Loyola, Tulane, and Audubon Park), the Camellia Grill is conveniently located where the streetcar turns onto Carrolton, this is on Jimmy's cheeseburger list, but it is a tiny counter restaurant that gets very busy at peak meal times. They also have an excellent breakfast. I could go on and on, more restaurants, cigar stores, local music, but I'll cut myself off here. If there is anything more you want to know, post again, and I'll reply. I hope this helps, and I'll be glad to give you any more info I can, just let me know. Also, Copeland's is very good, it's also very much a chain, stick with the places that you won't find outside of the Crescent City.
