Margaritaville Lost Verse

OK, I have been wounding about this. In the TT&S liner notes, Jimmy says that the “over observant radio folks” noticed the song was too long for radio play. I just don’t get it. Does the verse really add that much length to the song? If Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone” got on the air uncut (I was not alive back then, but I think I remember hearing that it was aired) why did Jimmy most popular song have to be modified? And why is it also cut on the album? Does anyone know if the complete original recording exists? I was really looking forward to hearing it on MMIM, (it looked like the perfect opportunity to get it out there) but the same cut version was all there was. And it seems that Jimmy’s not singing it [the lost verse] anymore at shows. Why?
It’s not like its stopping me from enjoying the song how it is, I’m just curious about things like this. If CILCIA ever got reissued with the original artwork and liner notes, remastering and bonus tracks, the uncut version of Margaritaville would be a good candidate.

um, check out feeding frenzy or any concert from the 70's, early 80's.
They cut the song because he was a new artist breaking onto the scene, not quite Bob Dylan.

Yeah, I know. The song is just fine without the verse, but he shouldent let the radio people win.

My brother told me the same thing.

Except that in the music biz, radio = record sales = $$$$
Radio has the power, and if they want songs around 3 minutes, they get 'em. You don't p*** into the wind, so to speak. And if you don't want to play along, they'll fill the airwaves with acts that do...
Billy Joel references radio in his song "The Entertainer" when he says they "cut it down to 3:05"

PM I was alive during that time and most of the songs were just about
3 minutes long there were some exceptions to the rule but they
were already popular artists, now to go back to the fiftys check out
how short most of those songs were I mean 2:30 is about the average
for most of those songs. KLL is much more knowlegable than I on this
subject but I have always heard that Marty Robbins (SP) was the one who
first started to pen longer songs and was told than that the public
did not have the attention span for songs longer than were being played.
BTW I love the lost verse and would like to hear how/when Jimmy
decided to share it with us.

The lost verse is on the Tuesday,Thursday, & Saturdays LP. Also, he did the lost verse on the 2001 Beach Odysey tour in Detroit.
I give the lost verse thumbs up!

Does anyone else feel like the "lost" verse is a bit contrived and maybe it wasn't really BORN until he put it on TT,S?

No way.....the verse was on the "You had to be there" version; the first of the JB albums I had.....Quite frankly, the first time I saw him live I said to my friend next to me that he SKIPPED the then unnamed "lost verse", not knowing that the studio/radio/whatever version had it omitted until purchasing such versions after my first show...

No, because it was released originally on "You Had To Be There" which was a live conert recording released in 1978.
IMHM it's the best of ALL of JB's live albums.

Oh, okay. Guess that's what I get for not having ALL Jimmy's albums.

Thanks for educating me, gang.

I think the whole "Margaritaville" thing worked out okay for Jimmy.

I with you on that one Lee, YHTBT is one of my favorite Buffett albums.

Not only does YHTBT have the lost verse.... the first time around Jimmy sings "It's all Cecil's fault" and I know who that is.
Since I am leaving to take the Keets to a pumpkin patch to pick out this years soon to be massacred 'kins, I won't leave you in suspense.
Cecil, who is at fault is Columbia SC (Camden?) area promoter Cecil Corbett. I haven't seen or heard from him since 1992 but he owns (Owned) C & C Productions. I think he founded Cellar Door orginally. He claims responability for Jimmy and Alabama (no ego here). He promoted a couple of concerts for me at Capitol City Stadium when I was with the Mets there. He was supposed to take me backstage at Charlotte in 1991, but got sick from the heat and I never got to go.
The best way to describe Cecil Corbett would be, "John Madden on Speed", about 350 lbs of perpetual motion.
Thought you might like to know TTFN

What I wonder is who is "finding" some of the old songs that are on the last
couple of setlists? I AM not complaining at all but Saxaphones and
Spicolis Theme? Gotta love them but is SJ going through the old CDs

I've always thought Jimmy went back through all of his albums and picked a song that he hasn't done in a while and puts it in the set list.
