Buffettnews.com Mentioned on Chicago's 95.9 The River

Post by Tiki Bar »

The River is doing Buffett trivia this week to give away tix to the private opening of Cheeseburger in Paradise in Downers Grove on Monday.

Today's question was, "according to Buffettnews.com, what song did Jimmy perform during his 1980's appearance on "The Fishin' Musician" segment of Second City TV with John Candy?"

They fielded a bunch of incorrect guesses from callers, so then they added he also played it at a Presidential Inauguration. Still a bunch of incorrect guesses... so then Karen gave the hint a southern state is included in the title, and someone finally got it. (I never got past the busy signal.)

Kudos to Geno, Karen, and The River for at least trying to give them to worthy (or resourceful) parrot heads.

WOOOO HOOOOO! Way to go BN! :D

[rant] The country station US99.5 on the other hand... aye aye aye. They're just taking caller 99 when they announce to call in. :x :x Today's winner has never seen Jimmy, and couldn't even name 4 Buffett songs. :x Nervous my ass! The kicker is that they keep touting this exclusive event that only they have tickets too. They may be a powerhouse in Chicago radio, but the suburban WERV The River is outclassing them in their ticket giveaway. [/rant]

I live in the Hartford, Connecticut area.

We also have a "River" radio station, 105.9. We are really lucky that they play a Buffett song every weekday at the end of the 5 o'clock rush hour (usually between about 5:50 and 6:00). Some of the cuts are real deep.

Give it a listen if you ever happen to be driving through at that time.

:D :wench: 8) :D Kidding, of course!

US99's will be around 8:30am tomorrow... I've never gotten past "all circuits are busy" calling them for anything.

The River mixes it up - somewhere between 6:00 am and 9:00 am.

Good luck! If I don't win, I can only hope it's a fellow BNer! And I'm a cheap date!

I hate to sound like a know-it-all
but...
I remember seeing the episode of SCTV where Jimmy went "baloon fishing" with the Fishin' Musician, and he sang "Slow Boat to China", I don't remember hearing "Stars Fell on Alabamba". Just to make sure that my memory wasn't playing tricks on me, I did a web search and found this reference:

http://sctvguide.ca/programs/fishin.htm

I hope none of the contestants who were told they were wrong guessed "Slow Boat to China" - I know I'd be pretty teed off!

Someone else brought that up earlier - I guess someone did guess "Slow Boat to China"

But the answer was technically correct because they did preface it with "according to BN", and it was Stars Fell on Alabama according to BN.

Unfortunately, I can't really give the radio station credit for "Getting It." In addition to the glaring error on the trivia this morning, one caller called in and suggested Brown Eyed Girl as an answer after receiving a hint that it wasn't a song you might otherwise attribute to Buffett.

Gino then mocked the caller and said something along the lines of "Yeah, right. Buffett and Van Morrison got together and did this song on SCTV. He had absolutely NO CLUE that Brown Eyed Girl has become a Parrot Head Favorite at concerts and that Buffett released a cover of the song.

He had to come on later and apologize for his comments.

I'll say that they "get it" when they play Buffett music on their radio station after this whole Cheeseburger thing is over. They could get a lot of people listening to the station that way, but somehow I doubt that they will do it.

Unfortunately, the other station giving away tickets, US-99 doesn't do trivia and just gives the tickets to the 99th caller. The winner this morning has never gone to a Buffett concert in his life and couldn't even name 4 of Buffett's songs. The segment ended with the DJs giving the caller advice on where to go buy clothes for the concert.
