My vote for Livingston Sat. nite is just a trip down memory lane
and IF you grew up during the '70s in my neck of the woods you
couldn't go to a honkytonk without hearing Margaritavile and LSN.

I think very few of his songs could be classified as being pure country, it seems to me they've always been a mixture of his island music influences thrown together with all of his other influences which just happen to draw strongly from country and folk. Hell, I even have an old Time magazine clipping from the early to mid 70s that refers to his music at that time as "Caribbean country". In any event, I had high hopes that when he finally got around to making a record like this that it wouldn't include today's country artists (which are barely "country" to me) but would include collaborations with such folks as Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, John Prine, Willis Alan Ramsay, Todd Snider and Jesse Winchester. Even the liner notes to Riddles in the Sand manage to name drop both Bob Wills AND Bob Marley. I've also always like the "Gulf and Western" description but my heart sank even lower when I was reading some article about the upcoming album and saw Cyndi Lauper's name mentioned. Guess I will just try to bite my tongue in the meantime and reserve judgement until it's actually released but I'm not too impressed by some of these initial reports of what Buffett has in mind for the album. I also doubt he would re-record any of his old songs for this new record. I don't know about the rest of you, but that concept didn't work too well for me on his latest (Meet Me In Margaritaville). Anyway, here's some of the songs I'd love to hear him play on the Conchy Tonk Tour:

Brahma Fear
Semi-True Stories
Why Don't We Get Drunk (a straight reading, please)
Livingston Saturday Night (Rancho Deluxe version with the rollicking piano)
West Nashville Grand Ballroom Gown
Railroad Lady (with Jerry Jeff)
Door Number 3
The Christian
Tonight I Just Need My Guitar
That's What Living Is To Me
When The Wild Life Betrays Me
Stars on the Water
Something So Feminine About A Mandolin
Gypsies In The Palace
Banana Repbulics
Ringling, Ringling

To some extent i agree with you.To be honest i'd rather him not release a strictly country album at all.I mean if you look at the last 3 studio albums, not compilations, there all pretty different. I guess for me i'm looking for some sort of stability with the music i.e. the albums that were released from 1994-1996 or really anything prior to 1998.Don't get me wrong i really enjoyed DSTC and FSOTW, (Beach House does not rank among Jimmys better works. in my opinion its very uneven, but hey you can't win 'em all)i just think the last few years when looking at each album, has been, well, i guess you could say "experimental". I guess to some it all up, the writting has certainly changed since 1996.

Exactly what he has in mind with Conchy Tonk remains to be seen until we hear the album but I feel his songwriting with Mac on some of the more recent albums (and I'm including Beach House in here) is some of his strongest since the 70s. I think it took Mac to finally show him how to write a "Jimmy Buffett song" again. A prime example of this is "Semi-True Stories" from Beach House. It just seems to have all the hallmarks of what I feel was his strongest songwriting period (White Sportcoat-Havana Daydreamin'). Who knows, he may surprise us all. While he's at it, he may even surprise himself which would be even more gratifying.

You are right we should wait until he actually reveals it.But, he has already publicly said who and what he wants on the record. Its going to be alot of covers, and one that was already talked about on the board,"Champion of the World"didn't exactly get my excited.Yes Mac is a great song writer, i happen to not like "Semi-True Stories" and most of Beach House album. To me it sounds like a recycled song and a deliberate attempt at that. But if you take songs like "Changing Channels" and "Its My Job" those are amazing! I guess its the same old story everyones entitled to an opinion, and we all listen for the same reasons.i just think that the lack of co-writing with the rest of the band over the last few years is very evident in the music and i do yearn for a somewhat "return to mid-90's form".but it probably won't happen! As an artist your supposed to move forward and as of lately that means covering songs and using a lot of outside writers.hey, he's entitled to it!

How about including a more recent "country-flavored" offering ...
"Lucky Stars" from BHOTM.

Lest we not forget "Brand New Country Star"...

"He's a cheeseburger eatin' abandon Sunday meetin' brand new country star

He rides around in a Lincoln Continental - no steer horns on his car

He's a hot Roman candle from the Texas panhandle, he can either go country or pop.
