In the case of the Mount Moriah and Megafaun, I'm reevaluating two of my favorite records of 2011 with an ear towards compiling my best of 2011 list. I'm also looking very forward to seeing them on the same bill in Durham in a couple of weeks. I'm fully expecting that concert to be off of the chain. With Here We Rest, as much as I hate to admit it, I'm giving it a spin for the very first time despite having purchased the record way back in November when I saw Isbell and McMurtry at the Lincoln in Raleigh.

Judging from some of the comments I've read in relation to their appearance on SNL last night, it seems like Bon Iver weren't very well received (I didn't see the performance so I can't weigh in). However, I did see Justin Vernon (who basically is "Bon Iver") this past week when he sat in on guitar with his main squeeze, Kathleen Edwards, at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. I have seen Justin a couple of times before, once opening for Wilco as Bon Iver and more recently, playing with his former bandmates from DeYarmond Edison (who have since splintered off into their own group called Megafaun) at the Sounds of the South concert at the Hayti Cultural Center in Durham last year (which also included Sharon Van Etten and Fight the Big Bull). Justin's music is pretty laid back for the most part (which is a huge understatement) but he absolutely ripped it up on guitar last week with Kathleen. He only sat in on 4-5 songs but during "Mercury" he went head to head with Kathleen's lead guitarist in a guitar duel that melted faces (including my own). That was very refreshing to see. While I enjoy some of his music (as Bon Iver), the majority of it is just too sedate to my ears.

I've only just recently started listening to Bon Iver. It's the type of music I definitely need to be in the mood for. I like it 'cause it's different...'course I also tend to be an Eno (as in Brian) and Portishead junkie. Wish I could have seen Justin 'tear up' the guitar. I like when artists surprise everyone like that - just 'cause that's not what they always choose to do, doesn't mean they can't. My musical tastes range from one extreme to the other. There's really not a whole lot that I won't listen to.
