Jonathan,
You can listen to all of Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison's new album, Cheater's Game at NO DEPRESSION...and have a chance to win a vinyl copy:

Thanks for the heads up. I just scored a promo copy of her Translated From Love album over the weekend.
I stopped buying so much music when I retired, so I pick and choose very carefully. The last Bruce Robison with Kelly Willis I bought was Country Sunshine and their Christmas CD. It's been a long time since I bought their music, but I'm gonna have to have this latest one. I think I have everything of hers prior to 2002.

I miss having the liner notes from albums. I had no idea that one of my favorite songs on Cheater's Game, We're All The Way, is an Eric Clapton song from Slowhand.

Nancy: Here's the last paragraph of the missive that makes up the liner notes for the new Townes CD. Couldn't have said it better. Of course, I lost all objectivity about Townes a few years back.

The art of Townes Van Zandt reveals itself a little at a time. Every hearing brings forth something you can't believe you missed all the other times, or something that rings even truer today than back when. The alternate versions are like seeing a friend in a new light. The new songs are simply good to have when it seemed as if the barrel was empty. An so here are two hours of Townes Van Zandt's music, some of it unheard since the engineer peeled off a little splicing tape to seal the box around forty years ago. Twenty-eight journeys through life's highs, lows and in-betweens.

I think this is my first Kelly Willis album even though I've been a fan of hers for years. My main problem when it comes to music consumption is buying albums I rip to iTunes that sometimes never get heard. It's not exactly the loftiest of goals but one of my New Year's resolutions is to at least make an effort to listen to the music I buy rather than just amassing a huge iTunes library. It's nice to have tons of music to choose from but not if you're not listening to it. However, I still find the budget/used bin downright irresistible which is the case with my most recent round of purchases. If given the choice, I'm more apt to buy vinyl these days, especially if it comes with a download code card. In some cases, vinyl also comes with a CD. I just get so much more out of it than a mp3 download where there's very rarely any artwork or other information about the recording.

I have really missed the album artwork and liner notes. I still have not transferred all my CDs in my iTunes icloud. I do listen to a LOT of digital music. (I really like when artists include album info booklets for digital downloads. Kenny Chesney always does that.)

Some day I'll just have to have a Kelly Willis day and get everything on the computer.

If they have it on iTunes it'll be available in icloud through iTunes Match. Makes it easy to get into music on iPhone.

So much music...so little time. :)

I don't think I've ever purchased anything from the iTunes store. Pretty much everything in my iTunes music library comes from my own CD collection. I have downloaded a few albums but they're ones that are out of print that I already own on vinyl. I got an iTunes gift card for Christmas but it's just sitting around collecting dust. I also recently upgraded to iPhone (Verizon offered me a deal I couldn't resist) but I haven't used it for anything other than a phone so far. I really don't see that changing anytime soon. There's already enough people out there that are completely absorbed by their phones, far too many of whom are behind the wheel. I really don't want to become one of them.

The latest release from Michael Rank & Stag. Michael is a veteran of the local (NC) music scene and used to front Snatches of Pink and Clarrissa back in the 90's. In recent years he's been performing under the Snatches moniker and doing acoustic sets with Marc Smith of Patty Hurst Shifter (Marc's also a member of Stag). Last year he released the double set Kin, the first album under the Stag name. Stag is a collective of local musicians culled from John Howie, Jr. and the Rosewood Bluff, Maldora, Mandolin Orange and others.

This is the fourth album from Richmond's Horsehead. I kept missing them every time they come to town over the past year or so but I finally caught up with 'em when they played Sadlack's in Raleigh last night. I guess they could be classified as "alt.country" but they definitely come down on the rock n' roll side of that equation.

Except for a couple of select cuts like "The Trees" and "La Villa Strangiato" I haven't heard this in years.

Yes, it is. In the Beyond the Lighted Stage documentary they talk about trying to record it without the benefit of a metronome so they wouldn't lose their place in the song but it was so complex they couldn't do it. Great doc, highly recommended if you've never seen it (and even if you haven't).

This just came out today. I'm four songs in and loving it. It has a much more traditional country sound than the stuff you hear on the radio right now and Ashley is a brilliant songwriter.
