Glad to see ya picked up
Begonias. I've heard a few tracks from it over the summer (including a rare cover of Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" from their Asheville show with Alejandro Escovedo sitting in) but it's still not available in any of the local stores. I'll be fixing that when I head up to Raleigh later this month to see Steve Earle and Allison Moorer (who I hear just got hitched) at the Museum of Art. Lucinda was just there on Wednesday and from all reports, she was on fire, playing lots of favorites and several cuts from her next studio record.

I wasn't familiar with Thad Cockrell and I really like his unique voice. It's kinda high, huh?! I like BEGONIAS!

I haven't heard anything since his first album other than a song or two but I've heard a few things that remind me of Ryan Adams.

The August edition of Uncut magazine comes with three separate covers, each of which include a different CD compiled by Mike Mills, Michael Stipe and Peter Buck of R.E.M.

Yeah, and he sounds a little like Chip Robinson of Backsliders? Throwing Rocks at the MOON??
I also thought of Tommy Womack's voice when I heard Thad on Begonias. I'm enjoying it.
I like unique voices like Wayne the Train Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Nanci Griffith, Junior Brown, etc. Tommy Womack's is about as unique as they get. Listen for a new one called Daddy with Tommy and Will Kimbrough.

Can't say I picked up on him sounding like Chip, I'm just glad to see someone mention the very underappreciated Backsliders here. Chip moved to New York within the last year to work on a solo record he's recording with Eric "Roscoe" Ambel from Steve Earle's Dukes. Hopefully it'll be out sooner rather than later.
Mostly Thad just sounds like Thad to me but occasionally he'll remind me of Ryan or Dwight but mostly I think he sounds pretty original.
I also like unique voices but sometimes Nanci overdoes the "little girl" voice thing and it gets on my nerves. Julie Miller (wife of Buddy Miller) and Stacey Earle (Steve's sister) fall into the same trap sometimes. Otherwise I like Nanci very much and consider her one of my favorites. I had hoped to see her and Tift Merritt on the same bill at UNC in October but it's the night before the Stones play Duke so I may not be able to make it.
