News from Key West, Recording Conchy Tonk and Will Kimbrough

Russ on the Todd Snider list posted this after Will said he was going to Key West, Russ caught up with him on the telephone.
<<<After a couple of days playing phone tag with that alien in Key West I
finally hooked up with Will Kimbrough last night. Sparky, your source
is
correct, they are not going to record "Champion of the World" but they
DID
record "Piece of Work" yesterday....in one take!! This is actually good
for
Will(bad for Mr. Owen who co-wrote COTH with Will). And Will IS going
to be
all over the record...looks like he'll be on every track. They will
finish
up this session today and Buffett is taking the players out to dinner
tonight and then they'll probably play at Margarittaville Cafe tonight!
Damn! I wish I was in Key West! While discussing what to play tonight
it was
unanimous with the band to play Piece of Work. Go Will!
This record is apparently Buffetts answer to Alan Jackson for having
Buffett
on his record. It will definitely have a country flavor. There will be
another session in Nashville the first of the year. Others to be on the
record are: Tobey Keith, (Piece of Work), Alan Jackson, George Strait,
Kenny
Chesney, Martina McBride and maybe Nancy Griffith. I know there will be
some
Grumpy Old Parrotheads that will be unhappy with the country
influences(but
they'll buy it anyway) but with names like the ones on the record will
probably get it some country radio play and sells to a lot of fans of
the
above artists. And Will thinks it will sound more like Buffetts earlier
stuff. Probably a very smart move by Buffett. And it won't hurt Will
none
either!
Will said to tell everyone on the list hi and that he's having a ball
in Key
West and loving working with the session players and Buffett. I think
Will
was celebrating a bit last night....he was in a very jovial mood and
talking
a mile a minute. Oh, the record is being produced by Michael Utley and
Mac
McAnnelly(sp?) Utley told Will that Buffett will probably be looking at
his
songs in the future! Maybe the Alien has finally landed! Will is
looking
forward to the new year and writing more and recording his own songs
and
doing some gigs of his own.
Happy holidays everyone,
now back to lurking.

I could do without the other artists on there, but i'll still buy it. Plus during the tour he'll do them live by himself and i can get just Jimmy version's then.

Like everyone else I am very excited about this Album. I would much rather not have the guests on their except for AJ, Toby Kieth and Kenny Chesney. Those three I think would be good, but i dont want every song to have someone on it. My other complaint is what this will do for the tour. I am afraid it might start attracting the country crowd, which dont get me wrong I love country music and just recently say AJ, but I think we may see a number of country fans who dont know w hat parrotheads are? Does anyone else share this view. I know it is kind of selfish.

Well, Mike, if and when this happens, it will just be
our responsibility to
teach them what they need to know. If we get through to enough of them
it may just change the style of the crowds at NASCAR events! (Do you
think that having the stands full of flowered shirts and coconut bras would
be too much of a distraction to the drivers?

The stuff is supposedly not THAT country - still Jimmy. More like Jimmy's earlier (but not EARLIEST) works... I've heard it will be one of the best albums of late.

The few songs he did last night did not sound country, they sounded a lot like Far side songs did.

Sounds like a plan Desdamona, I am sure none of those drivers will get confused when they see Fins in the crowd either.

I'm dissapointed to see Toby Keith will be on the album. As some of you know, I'm not a fan

Jimmy has yet to have an idea that I didn't like so I'm definitely looking forward to it. As for country fans migrating to Parrotheadism, I say bring it on. That's just more friends, fans, and fun. Pretty soon we'll take over the world.

gotta agree with you on this one....my thoughts are simple: if you need country influences, then get your
Mac McAnally ready
ok maybe i'm partial....the new cd will be great anyway

I have seen Will Kimbrough many times and I can tell you he is a superb guitar player and singer. I am proud that Jimmy gives these guys a chance to get some musical exposure.
Guys like Jimmy were given chances in the past. JB covered songs by Keith Sykes and Rodney Crowell and Nanci Griffith. Will K. is definitely that sort of guy...a true professional, and down to earth.
I hope many you will enjoy getting to know about Will.
Heck, Todd Snider's music means a lot to me and I started listening to him, because of Buffett. I probably would have "discovered" Todd anyway, but I enjoy the musical connections I've made through Buffett.

I say co-write songs with Will Jennings again for this one.Just think back at how great the songs he did with Buffett in the early to mid 80's were!During that era you had a real good cross between the island sounds and the western sounds and Will Jennings was largely responsible for that.I hope this album is not a glimpse into the begining of the end for music like Fruitcakes and Barometer Soup!!!!

I had a meeting yesterday where someone told me that Mac was working with Jimmy right now on the album. Here's some stuff on him from his bio:
Making his own albums aside, Mac is also notable as a producer of artists ranging from Jimmy Buffett to Ricky Skaggs to Sawyer Brown. Furthermore, his guitar work and harmony vocals can be heard on albums by such luminaries as Lyle Lovett, Trisha Yearwood, Keith Whitley, Nanci Griffith, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, George Jones, Reba McEntire, Hank Williams Jr. and Patty Loveless, among others.
As a songwriter, McAnally has provided hits for Buffett ("It's My Job"), Alabama ("Old Flame"), Shenandoah ("Two Dozen Roses"), Steve Wariner ("Precious Thing"), Sammy Kershaw ("Southbound"), Nanci Griffith ("Nickel Dreams") and Sawyer Brown (the Grammy-nominated "All These Years"). He is also a song publisher and arranger. Moreover, this Southern Renaissance man operates his own recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
To remain fresh as a live performer, McAnally alternates his solo shows with stints as a guest member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band. Members of that crew can be heard on Word of Mouth's "The Ass and the Hole," "Things to Do Today" and "Pop Top Hop."

It's Jimmy! It's new! Bring it on! Geaux Tigers, sorry Georgia, we're just trying to get to the Sugar Bowl - hopefully against the surfer boys: Oklahoma just doesn't look like it would be a challenge.

Will is extremely talented guitarist. I know Will from having seen him over the last few years touring with Rodney Crowell. I am happy that his music will be getting more exposure through Jimmy. I am sure he will be a big asset to Conchy Tonk!

I don't know. If it is that good its kinda sad to think that it was done without the majority of the Reefer Band and the fact that it is going to be heavily laced with covers and guest artists.i don't know about you guys, but this could have a profound effect on the future in the negative sense!Just a thought.I hope i'm wrong and this only a one off deal.
